| Well, at least we now know the fractious, ol' bastard's still alive. Exactly why he's shunning us is a mystery, though.

Come participate a little, help lower the level of discourse with the rest of us.

Filthy, Mooner, Dude.....
"Where've you been so long? We were a little worried."
"...at least we now know the fractious, ol' bastard's still alive. Exactly why he's shunning us is a mystery, though."
"...there aren't enough crusty old farts around here! err...."
In order received:
I've been in the Coeur D'Alene metro area mostly. Some travel. What you didn't ask is, what have I been doing? It's none of your business but my prodigious ego demands that you ask!
I am curious about that word worry! Above or below the ground? And which condition would lessen the concern? Don't answer!
I deeply appreciate the apellation "fractious". It nicely encompasses and enhances the self-image which I've been burnishing for years. It's really gratifying to have others -- inferior, but near peers --agree with your every word!
"Old" is a relative term. Consider dirt.
"Bastard" really hurts. Sometimes I feel like a fatherless child, but I assure you sons of bitches that I can produce the long form birth certificate anytime on demand. From my back pocket. Unlike that masquerading Muslim Kenyan socialist fraud Obama! Fucking alien!
Dude's totally predictable scatology is reassuring. He hasn't emerged from puberty yet. I was a little apprehensive as to what kind of werecreature he might morph into whenever he matured. It appears it will never happen, thank God (and superior deities like Dave.)
"Crusty fart" indeed conjures a lovely image. I've been carrying it around in my mind since lunch. Enhances the appetite. Thanks, Dude
For years my primary income has derived from common stock investment. I have been hit pretty hard by the massive decline in stock values since last September. Consequently, I've gone back to work day trading. It's a relatively new discipline for me, I've known the basics for a long time but it's been years since I actually spent full time B&S for a living. My portfolio was pretty stable and on autopilot until the shit hit the fan last fall.
Anyway, I'm don't have quite the energy level I did fifty years ago, and it's a lot of work. 9:30 AM in New York is 6:30 PST. I'm up at five and I'm pretty tired by market close. I've managed to build a new portfolio structure that's providing more cash flow than my old fund-heavy bluechip book, but it's pretty high maintenence.
Anyway, the Market's back to the nines as of today and I'll be out of the woods by the time Dow recovery hits 10,000 plus, so I'm a hell of a lot better off than many. My wife's job is stable and her income has been a real blessing in these nasty times. I'll probably get back to some regular posting later this year.
How has the economic doldrums affected you guys? Dude tells me he's a RN and that's a damn good thing to be in this current labor market. They're screaming for them up here in Idaho.
How about you, Filthy? Has your Government assistance been compromised any by recession?
And Mooner -- are you having any income deprivation due to the very bad California economy?
There seems to be remarkably different scenarios in different geographical areas. Michigan is a horror story with 15% unemployment, over 25% in Detroit. The urban South and California seem to be severely affected. Up here in the Pacific Northwest, we are experiencing a fairly mild recession. I get mixed response from friends on the Eastern seaboard - from "terrible" to "not so bad". Other contacts in Arizona and New Mexico cite serious unemployment statistics. However, my son in Denver just launched a new business this summer (took some of my time, too!), and he is doing extremely well! So go figure -- it's pretty much a mixed bag!
I have a sense that the general media are somewhat exaggerating the degree and severity of the "Great Recession" as it has been called.
It sure as hell knocked a big hole in an inflated stock market, and unemployment is indeed serious in many parts of the country. But I really don't see anything like the Great Depression of 1929-1939. I was age one through eleven during that time, and although my family didn't suffer seriously, we certainly felt the effects of what was going on, and the memories are quite clear!
Let me know what your individual inpressions are as to what is going on in this country right now, recession wise. I would be very interested, as I have talked extensively to many geographically diverse friends, relatives, and ex-associates all over the United States, and I have a definitely mixed impression of the big picture!
I'll be back from time to time. Thanks to all you guys for enquiring as to the state of my mortality! Having elevated the discourse level here back to decent standards, I have to get back to being a Master of the Universe, lest the Universe fail in my absence.
May the Force visit your Loins!...... and a bathroom be near!

Well! How kind of you to take a little time out from your depraved, capitalist machinations to visit us, those few upon this earth who love you! Or at least will still speak to you.
I used the term "Bastard" in the sense of the Left Hand -- the right hand never knows that rascal's doing and therefore, it is the sinister hand. I do hope that you feel better about it now.....
Me, I'm hangin' in. The biggest effect on me has been the rising prices of everything, but it hasn't crimped my style as much as it has many others, mainly because, while I'm all but broke, I am debt-free.
Hey, seriously, welcome back! Please, drop by and sneer at us now & again -- we missed you!

Rather the US and world economies, as they are where my IRA mutual funds have thrown away my money. From an original monthly take-out of about $2,000, I now take out only $450, and even that's about $50 more than I should take. Social Security is my primary income. I've been getting closer and closer to making due these past several months, and hope to eventually have a couple of dollars left in my wallet at all times. At least I no longer run out of food on a regular basis.
Great to "hear" you again, Bill! We were worried, you know, because with us old farts, when one of us drops out of sight for more than a week, there's usually a serious case of death involved.
I hope you'll weigh in more often, now that we've determined you're superterranean. We've missed you!

Hey! You're back!
Damn, everyone else beat me to it. On the bright side, I was able to read a perfectly good rant or two, and I was able to learn a new word: "superterranean".
If I ever take up scrabble, I'll be able to make my opponents my ####es with that.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
