Can you guess the trap that Myers et al fell for? I suspect that the very fact that Myers goes to such lengths to make sure that everyone behaves may be used by those people as evidence that atheists are immoral.
Or am I being too paranoid?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

I am sure they will use it: 'See, atheists needs all these rules, it is the prove that you can't be moral by yourself and need a guidance, and God is the best of all'.
But, frankly, that'd because they wouldn't have anything else to go with and it would be much worse if the atheists in question made asses of themselves during the visit, so PZ's precautions are welcome. |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. When we went on a field trip in grade school, the teachers would give us a speech about where we were going and how we should behave. This seems to me to be the same thing.
They sent a letter saying "we won't tolerate this type of behavior", then Prof. Myers sent word to his group "don't act up or we may be thrown out". A reasonable request on his part. I don't see how the museum folks could really use the "immoral atheists" claim. Of course, they've never let a little thing like reason stop them from making these claims before.

I dunno. I'm sure they'll try to make a talking point out of it some kind of way. Unlike some others I've talked too, I don't think they'll try to put in a disruptive ringer. It's much easier to simply lie -- ln the name of Jesus of course, which makes it all ok.
Unfortunately, I'm definitely not going. This week, using the bike as sole transportation, has convinced me that I no longer have the stamina for a 600 mile day.
But I am going to see that monument to mendacity; I'll just have to do it when I can afford to take more time for it.
Bummer any way you cut it.

With my car insurance a little more than expected and my mom visiting from AZ a couple weeks ago, my bank account won't let me go.

I'm thinking maybe in the spring when tax refund time rolls around. That gives me time to do some reading about the museum and really be prepared for whatever silliness they have over there. I don't like the thought of giving Ham my money, but I'm also curious. And, it'll be good to show my son fake dinosaurs, then come home and watch real dinosaurs on Jurassic Park (at least, that's what my daughter always thought).

| Order the DVDs, Walking with Dinosaurs and Before the Dinosaurs from the Amazon.com. They are very good in spite of a few mistakes and not a little speculation.

I got a six disc set called Prehistoric Earth for X-mas last year. It's got all those "walking" shows that BBc did, from Before the Dinosaurs to Walking with Cavemen. I've also got The Dinosaur Heresies by Robert Bakker, The Complete T-Rex by John Horner, and a few other books and DVDs. If nothing else, I can read Jurassic Park and Raptor Red again. There's probably more truth in them than at Ken Ham's place.
