This island is now deserted, though it once was the most densely populated place on earth.

1. What's the name of the island?

2. Where is it?

3. For an extra point, what was the purpose of the island's development?

1. Hashima Island.

2. Part of the Japanese archipelago near Nagasaki.

3. Coal Mining. Coal mines closed due to increased use of petroleum in the 70's

Give me a tough one, Mooner. Anybody spent any time in Japan would know that!

It's no damn fun with you around, Bill! Correct again, for all three points.

Further info: Coal was mined there by Mitsubishi, at first using Korean slave labor, in horrible conditions spreading out into coal seams deep under the sea. The mine workers were kept on the island in high-rise dormitories.

Looks a lot like Alcatraz, doesn't it? An Alcatraz where inmates were forced to dig tunnels.
