It seems you almost then require the necessity of targeting systems that would allow you to target shield components. I would think you would do better with shield burn through then a hit where weaponry is stored or a power plant that would allow faster cascade problems for repair than would damage to shield components. Targeting specific systems would be more realistic. If you hit weapons storage you have not only damage from the weapon deployed but additional damage from the weapons themselves. Where if you target shields alone you eventually damage the shields beyond repair but don't necessarily destroy the ship. Targeting a powerplant should cause a cascade effect throughout the power systems allowing catastrophic failure of the shields prior to damage to the shield mechanism itself. Then you have additional difficulties in getting crew to damage control systems etc. Catastrophic failure of the powerplant may leave a ship dead but not killed.
Guess I'm thinking tactics vs. game play. (added) |

Trish, the game play is all about damage to specific components. If you can get your Attack Index (AI) high enough, you get free choice of which component to damage, but lower AIs may give you a choice of two random components, or the ability to choose among several neighboring components.
Each component can take a certain amount of damage (called "toughness") before it is utterly destroyed (and not-yet-destroyed components can be repaired in-battle). Destroying almost any component may cause catastrophic failure (explosion) of the entire ship (chunks of which may then damage or destroy the attacker). But just damaging components can cause them to function at reduced levels.
Shield components basically act as extra toughness points for all of the components in a ship, including the shield component itself.
dglas, you mentioned blowing away the crew. In Myoss Gamma, the crew components in a ship determine how many actions a player gets per turn. As they are lost, a player will be able to do fewer things each turn. If you lose all your crew (and your bridge) without blowing up, your ship basically becomes a big piece of space trash (unless you've got another ship and good comms on both to establish remote control). |

Heres my solution,
Layered shields, higher strength shields add new shield generators, large weapons can only destroy one layer at a time.
Extra generators means less space for weapons or crew.
Also you could add Hull Plating as a different type of shielding or go with individually shielded components. |

Well, I just posted the link wrong here.
I figured it out - I run FireFox with AdBlock Plus - AdBlock was blocking it out for some reason even though I had never been to your site before. Once I turned it off, I can now see everything.

No not the whole page. I'll post a screen shot for you with Adblock enabled:

...well, it validates just fine.
Oh, I think I see what the problem is. I'll try to fix it tonight. |

Yes, and AdBlock shows ###contentads as the blocked attribute. |

Edited to add that I've just installed AdBlock Plus, myself, and yeah, it kills 95% of my site, which may explain, partly, my high bounce rate and low average time-on-site. |
