What on Earth? #46: Looks Pretty Much Empty

This area seems to be the Back of Beyond.

1. What's geographically somewhat interesting about a point near the center of this image?

2. Where is this located?

Hint # 1: I'd written above that "This area seems to be the Back of Beyond." Maybe I could rephrase that as "Middle of Nowhere".

Hint # 2: It's not what's visible in this image that's "somewhat interesting," but rather it is a statistical fact about an otherwise unremarkable point in the image.

Hint # 3: The image is of a part of South Dakota.

I'll guess it's either the center of the lower 48 or the center of North America.

Agita should get the point if we are to believe wiki...
It sits essentially, in the middle of North America, and in fact, a stone marker in Rugby, North Dakota, identifies it as being the "Geographic Center of the North American Continent". With 70,762 square miles (183,273 km2),[4] North Dakota is the 19th largest state.[5]

Wait a minute! You said South Dakota! That geographical point is in North Dakota! WTF?

Who's right or wrong....Mooner. Agita, Wiki, or me?

I definitely read South Dakota in Wiki -- this may be another Wiki vs. Wiki problem, as with the largest glacier.

Agita's shotgun answer to one of the questions would have to be narrowed down to one or the other. For the other question, I would need a more exact answer than just a state, which I already gave as a hint.

One thing to consider is that there are many false or erroneous markers and claims made for such points all over the world. bngbuck's quote only mentions a marker making such a claim, and doesn't say it's correct. Plus, it states "American continent."

Please provide that Wiki link, bngbuck, even though the claim is for a "center" of something different from what I'm looking for. Also, it's not the same Wiki reference I have.

Proving one's answer is not mathematically easy, but I will accept any Wiki reference that states clearly a location and also states it has more than a marker making a claim, but is such a point.

Hint # 4: We are looking at a "mean geographical center" of something other than North America.

Mooner.....

Here's the Wiki link to your reference (hint 4)

It states that the geographical center of the United States is in South Dakota!

Yes, thank you. That's a (probably) correct answer to a different question.

The answer I was looking for was the geographical center ("centroid") of the 50 US States. Since bngbuck's reference gives the correct location...
The geographical center of the U.S. is 17 miles (27 km.) west of Castle Rock in Butte County.[
... I will somewhat reluctantly accept that for both of the answers. Next time, please supply the precise answer here, not just a Web page and a general answer of the state, which was already given.

But... bngbuck gets two points, moving up to widen his lead!

The standings right now:
  1. bngbuck, 26 points
  2. Dave W., 22 points
  3. tw101356, 22 points
  4. lorddix, 9 points
  5. Hal, 7 points
  6. Moakley, 4 points
  7. Steinhenge, 4 points
  8. Hawks, 3 points
  9. Simon, 3 points
  10. astropin, 1 point
  11. Dude, 1 point
  12. Filthy, 1 point
(Ties above are listed in alphabetical order.)
