What on Earth? #49: Old Town

Refugees from a city that occupied this location founded a famous city nearby, a proud city that still stands today. A recent drought brought conditions that allowed the location of the "old town" to be established using visible and near-infrared photography. That aerial imaging shows the outlines of building foundations under the plow-level of cultivated fields.

For two points for each question:

1. What's the name of the city that was abandoned?

2. What's the name of its "successor" city?
