What on Earth? #51: Urban Hellhole The second series begins, earlier than I'd assumed...
Here's a city dominated by its very own gigantic toxic pit.
The water in the man-made pit is so highly acidic, it is eroding the walls. It is so polluted with metals, including heavy metals, the water itself is profitably mined for metal. The toxic water has risen to threaten the city's water table. At least one large flock of migrating aquatic birds has been killed by simply landing on the water's surface. New extremophile organisms seem to have evolved to live in its depths.
The damned pit has now become a profitable tourist attraction.
For one point for each question:
1. What's the name of the pit?
2. What's the name of the city it graces?

| Damn, you make it seem easy. So much (this far) for my wanting to make these harder. Back to the drawing board. I'll strive for more difficulty.
Congrats, you are correct, bngbuck, for two points.
The standings for this series:- bngbuck, 2 points
Here are a couple of links about the horribly fascinating Berkeley Pit: Wikipedia, and Atlas Obscura.
