What on Earth? #55: Murdered Village

(Note: I'm posting this one early because I'm going on a long scooter ride today. I fully suspect it will be already solved when I return this afternoon. Good luck!)
Almost the entire population of this town -- several hundred men, women and children -- were slaughtered. The town was also looted and burnt. It was left in this ruined condition as a memorial.

For one point for each question:

1. What's the name of this village?

1. Where is it?

Meh. I guessed

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

There you go......

Mooner posts puzzle at PST 8:17 AM 9/12

Hal posts answer at PST 8:36 AM 9/12

19 minutes! Hell of a good time, Hal! And this one was a 4 on the hardness scale. I did it pretending I hadn't already seen your answer and it took me 35 minutes. Took me four Google searches as there have been many entire towns slaughtered and burned -- as testament to man's inhumanity to man. Key word to the winner was the word "memorial".

Eight fucking AM on Saturday!! I didn't get up till ten! Mooner, go back to posting at four in the morning and I'll be back in the game, Marino! (As Jillian would say!)

It probably took me about five or ten minutes. The terrain and layout of the village looked kind of European. My first guess was Lidice, but then I remembered seeing photos of this village on cracked.com (!) some time ago. Wikipedia provided a handy list of massacres to point the way. My wife thinks I'm some kind of voyeur.

Correct, Hal, for two more points! Like bngbuck said, that was very quick.

Here's the Wiki article on the tragedy at Oradour-sur-Glane.
The standings now:
  1. Hal, 4 points
  2. bngbuck, 2 points
  3. lorddix, 2 points
  4. steinhenge, 2 points
(Ties are listed in alphabetical order.)

Dave.....

18:28, to be more precise. That's fast, but it's not 15:21.
That's a bit disingenuous. The word islet that Mooner unfortunately used in his preface was a dead giveaway to anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of medical terms. Certainly it is used to refer to small geographical islands, but one sees the word more frequently in reference to the hormone producing cell aggregations in the pancreas. Combine "islet" with an archtypical photograph of a microscope slide and that Puzzle was a 1 or 2 on the difficulty scale, with no need for Google.

"Export product" was a clever misleading word choice for this puzzle, as it led to a "small geographical island" interpretation of "islet"; but the cat was already out of the bag with "islet" being combined with the microscopic slide picture.

The current puzzle (#56) is a far better pictogriph. There is very little give-away descriptive terminology and the picture is extraordinarily difficult to analyze. I notice that it was posted yesterday at PST 5:50PM and has not been solved yet! No giveaways here!
