Creation, which opened the Toronto International Film Festival last week, might be winning favourable early reviews, but its still-controversial protagonist #8212; naturalist Charles Darwin #8212; has prevented the film from snagging U.S. distribution, according to one of its producers.
The Jon Amiel biographical drama stars real-life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as the evolution theorist and his devout wife, during the period when Darwin struggled with his faith, the loss of a beloved daughter and with the decision to publish his seminal On The Origin of Species.
Though Creation has scored deals to screen in movie theatres around the globe, U.S. distributors have been reluctant.
"People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the U.S. has picked it up," Jeremy Thomas, Creation's Oscar-winning producer, said in an interview with British newspaper the Telegraph.
"It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America."
The film has also sparked heavy debate and been criticized on U.S. Christian websites.

This is a prime example of the 'tyranny of the minority'. The proudly ignorant have made so much noise, out of all proportion to their actual numbers, that society cowers in fear of their anticipated reaction.
But they are not entirely to blame. The side of reason and rationality has been meek and mild for too long, it is time they all rose up and took to the streets. |

I think we can count on seeing it, sooner or later. If it doesn't find a distributor, and that ain't at all certain yet, BBC will surely show it on cable TV. From there, PBS might pick it up. And eventually, it wll be available on DVD.
In the meantime, we can enthusiastically damn the 6 day creation, theocratic scumbags to the perdition they so richly deserve. Yes, be damned to them and all that they stand for, AMEN!

Like the Democrats do despite the weak Republican minority in Congress. |
Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

There was some discussion on one of the Skeptic panels on Dragon*Con about this movie, and its lack of distributors.

As predicted: Darwin biopic Creation finally secures US distributorThe film will be handled by the same independent distributor that helped Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ to box-office success
Much tongue-wagging had been sparked by the fact that the Charles Darwin biopic Creation, starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as the scientist and his God-fearing wife, did not have a US distributor. Now it does: Variety reports that independent outfit Newmarket has picked up rights to the Jon Amiel drama, which depicts the personal torment that Darwin went through before the 1859 publication of his seminal work on evolution.

It does look good.
Odd coincidence: Paul Bettany (who plays Darwin) earlier played opposite Russell Crowe in the role of ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin in the film, "Master and Commander." In that role, the Dr. Maturin character scientifically explores the Galapagos a decade or two before Darwin did.
