What on Earth? #64: House

Here's an attractive rural residence.

One point for each question:

1. What's the name of the house?

2. What's its location?

3. Name at least two significant historical events that took place there.

Hint # 1: Near the house, the owner had a footpath constructed, complete with a "Light Side" and a "Dark Side."

The footpath.

Hint # 2: Here's an interior view of the house.

Edit:

Yep, I truly suck at this.

Ah well. I've really got to figure out how to play this damned game.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

1. Down House
2. Kent, UK
3. a>The writing of "the origin of species..."
b>Charles Darwin rented it. (both historic enough for me, anyway)

METHINKS IT IS LIKE A WEASEL

The correct answer, the correct answer, and a partially-correct answer. Two and a half points, Hawks, congrats!

For the two historical events, I was thinking of the writing of Origin, and Darwins death, though some other answers might have been acceptable.

Also, I believe Darwin bought Down House in 1842. I'll accept the first half of answer three, and close this problem to further points.
The standings:
  1. Hal, 16 points
  2. Hawks, 5.5 points
  3. lorddix, 4 points
  4. Randy, 3 points
  5. bngbuck, 2 points
  6. Simon, 2 points
  7. steinhenge, 2 points
  8. Dave W., 1 point
(Ties are listed in alphabetical order.)
