Barbara Ehrenreich has a new book out criticizing the "think positive" movement based on her personal experiences with breast cancer. I saw her interviewed on the Daily Show - good interview:

Oh, yeah! Ehrenreich is on target. Even back in 1984, I heard all that think-positive bullshit when I was feeling sick all the time for months and fighting stage three Hodgkins disease. In fact one of my best and the most respected friends not only told me I should think positively, but that I shouldn't bother with medical treatment.

I chewed that one over, rejected it, and never talked to that dangerous idiot again. (Despite Ehrenreich's comment that "they" tell you to take chemo along with your smilies, that ain't always so.)
