The Cyclic Theory of Evolution.
Neither Wet Willie nor the comic site he grabbed the illustration from seem to realize that when a species is gone, that's it. Gone. Something similar might evolve, but it would not be anything like the same. At least the comic site has an excuse -- they don't claim to be scientists.
It's a lucky thing, too, you realize when you look back at extinct species -- although I admit to loving the concept of going fishing for Dunkleosteus and hunting for Dimetrodon.
Heh, just when you start to think that UD is hopeless as well as hapless, they find a way to amuse.

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd also mention Denyse O'Leary's latest UD screed.
She links to a paper that "questions criminal law’s strong presumption of free will". It bugs her that there can be “possible justifications for preventative detention” as That’s what always happens when free will is denied. Somehow or other, the idea gets started that we can detect in advance who will commit a crime. Then you needn’t do anything to get arrested and put away. Someone just needs to have a theory about you. |
She doesn't seem to like this, which might be fine and dandy if it weren't for what she also writes in response to someone's comment:
We detain the mentally ill if and when they pose a threat to themselves or others *and are not considered responsible for their actions*. |
So, she also manages to argue that people sometimes lack free will and that is seems to be OK to detain them for the things they could potentially do.
Thanks for explaining your thoughts to us, Denyse.

Really, the size of that irony pulse would blow out meters world-wide, even when they're turned off. |

From Jim Lippard’s blog:
William Dembski would like to use copyright to quash criticism
From Jim Lippard’s blog: Although when it comes to other people's works, William Dembski hasn't seen a problem with taking copyrighted material and using it wholesale, dubbing over a computer animated video from Harvard and XVIVO of the inner workings of a cell with his own intelligent design-based commentary, when it comes to his own work he has a different standard… |

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.
