Why I'm asking? I'm thinking of maybe going to the Darwin Day "celebrations" in Saskatoon, which is set up by the Saskatoon Skeptics Society.
I figure it'd be nice to actually meet someone from these boards in real life and to check out this event and see how it works.
I don't have this in the "Announcements" section by the way, since this isn't important enough to rate it.

I am in Saskatoon, yes.
It's actually an event co-sponsored by the Saskatoon Skeptics Society and The Saskatoon Freethinkers, both of which groups I am a member of (although my attendance has been spotty of late - financial considerations). The Freethinkers Group has one of the now infamous bus campaigns going on right now as well.
Last year, they had a professor give a short talk about the life and times of Darwin, and offered coffee and cake and a short film. It was held in a library near the Lawson Heights mall. It lasted about 2-3 hours and was attended by approximately 40 people, IIRC. Last year, some went to a local pub afterward. We saw no active detractors last year. I expect something similar this year.
Your link shows that you have contact information for Sean. He's pretty likable (for a Bruins fan) and seems to have a swift mind at his command.
Unfortunately, I am not in any position to offer accommodations, I'm afraid. I have no idea if there is anyone else from these boards attending this event. |

I'm thinking of just a hotel for the night; I was just wondering if anyone from here would be showing up. I'm likely going to be going anyway, but if anyone from here was going to go I'd know to look out for a familiar name.

Here's an idea! Posted on: February 3, 2010 3:35 AM, by PZ Myers
Go sign this petition, too: it asks Obama to recognize Darwin Day on 12 February. Who knows, he might be willing!
A Proclamation
Charles Darwin was the first to propose the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection. On Darwin Day, celebrated on the anniversary of Darwin's birth on February 12, 1809, we celebrate the life and discoveries of Charles Darwin and express gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.
| And so forth.
Why not an official Darwin Day? Darwin did more for science and by extension, humanity, than Jesus ever managed. And wouldn't that put some fundie knickers in a twist! Ham and Dempski would have conjoined coronaries and the TX board of Education would spontaneously combust.
I doubt it'll happen, this year, anyway, but you'll never know for sure unless you try.

Honestly, I don't know if I will be attending or not yet. I am not in a good state right now. |

Sad to hear; I assume that it's nothing that we can help with?
