Oh, I don't know about that... IMO, Many scientists have been lauded and even given Nobel prizes for theories with no demonstrable, credible evidence, just their exalted words.
Back in the early fifties, Dave and I sneaked into a huge UFO meeting in LA. All the famous scientists were there. One scientist got up and made a long speech about dietetics, used the word several times, and the silent audience of scientists just nodded.
Another scientist finally corrected him. "You mean Dianetics, don't you professor...?"
The speaker smiled, continued his speech with the corrected word.
We looked at each other in disbelief, shrugged, and quietly left.

| My point is made, and I'm calling bullshit. L Ron Hubbard published his guide to complete idiocy in 1950, but even at that early date, it is doubtful that there were any actual scientists in the audience. But I must ask: if these "scientists" were famous, who were they? Give us some names. Also, what do Dianetics have to do with UFOs -- apart from it being beneficial to wear a tinfoil hat when discussing either, that is?

For example?
All the famous scientists were there.
|
All of them? Ahh yes, the "famous" scientists. Such as? |

Nothing, and that's the point. Scientists listening to nonsense and pretending to understand, or maybe in states of shock like those who claimed to see UFOs.
The meeting was supposed to be for astrophysical scientists, according to the article in the LA Times, but non-scientists could easly crash the party... We did.
I tried Dianetics myself, but couldn't reach any of the total recall states.

Scientists listening to nonsense... | Seriously: name one.

astrophysicists were at a conference concerning UFOs and L. Ron's bullshit? Why do I find that so difficult to accept?
References please...

UFOs were a big thing back then and concerned astrophysical scientists probably wanted to prove or disprove it. Of course Dianetics was a destraction, but things like that always happen at large gatherings, especially in Lalawood.

Why are you back-pedaling so furiously?...but things like that always happen at large gatherings, especially in Lalawood. | So you say, but you can't name a single scientist who was there, can you? Come on! Hell, Einstein was only 71 in 1950, and was surely a very famous scientist at the time. Was he there? |

Were any of these famous scientists Paleontologists?

| And now you are a "toothless, frail, 84 year old man (or is it 83?)" who should know better. Are you sure there were no Paleontologists nodding their heads sagely in the audience? Can you provide reference that such a meeting even took place.
There. Do you now see the problems that using anecdotes can present you?

From the New York Times' Dot Earth blog,, there is an Aussie now running a site devoted to "getting skeptical about global warming skepticism," with 101 (and counting) arguments and their scientific refutations. Worth a look. |

Good stuff. I might use the Aussie site as a pick. Thanks! |
