The NCSE has announced what they're calling the "UpChucky Awards," to be given out annually to "the most nauseating" creationist.
While funny, I really wish they wouldn't. They should leave the abusive language to the likes of me, and stick with their mission. I think this will hurt their reputation in the courts and with school boards, groups which aren't exactly known for their senses of humor.
Some might say, "what about Project Steve?" Yes, it is funny and intended to be so, but Project Steve actually makes very serious points about how science is conducted along the way. The UpChucky Awards seem to be nothing more than a game of "bash the creationists."
I wonder if the UpChuckies aren't a featherweight response to the NCSE being labeled as "accomodationist" so much in the past year.
Edited to add a hat tip to Greg Laden.

| I agree. Just as for both principled and tactical reasons NCSE should not have taken a side in the accommodation fight, for purely the tactical reasons you mention, they should leave the mudslinging to those who are better able to tolerate the back-splash. There are plenty of us who are both capable and willing. I prefer NCSE to be focused upon the positive aspects of science education.
To coin a phrase, science advocacy and the mockery of Creos should be non-overlapping magisteria.
Edit: Of course, I'll still be avidly following the Upchucky Awards, despite the fact I think the wrong folks are hosting them. |

The NCSE should maintain the moral high ground here and leave the ridicule to the professionals...
