The Catholic Church is a bunch of gay guys who repress homosexuals.
With the GOP, it's the other way around.

Oh, here's the answers: Donohue: When It Comes to Gays, the GOP Gets All Jittery and Inarticulate Submitted by Kyle on March 4, 2010 - 9:32am Religious Right activists are predictably upset that Congressional Republicans didn't make more of an effort to prevent Washington, DC's marriage equality law from taking effect:
"I'll be straight with you: I think they could have done more," Brian Brown, executive director of the National Organization for Marriage, said of Republican leaders. "We needed a vote, and we didn't get one."
"I haven't seen any effort by Senator Bennett to push the legislation, or by the Senate [Republican] leadership," said Tom McClusky, senior vice president of the Family Research Council Action.
There are obviously various reasons for why this happened, but Bill Donohue blames it on the fact that Republicans become "jittery" and inarticulate when it comes to speaking out against gays .... go figure:
William Donohue, the president of the New-York based Catholic League, questioned the party's commitment to a traditional marriage agenda. "They have an inarticulateness about homosexuality that they don't have on economic issues," Mr. Donohue said. "They can talk on and on about the free market, but when it comes to gays, they're jittery."
You know who Republicans could learn from in overcoming their jittery inarticulateness when it comes to attacking gays? Bill Donohue:
Honestly, is anyone surprised that a conservation between Pat Robertson and Bill Donohue discussing how "intellectually, morally, and spiritually bankrupt" liberals are trying to "tear down society" consists entirely of a five minute rant from Donohue declaring "we're not going to allow gay people to adopt children, that's against nature, it's against nature's god," saying that the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal was due entirely to gays, and finally asserting that those who don't share his views are nothing but "termites" who are "no more Christian than the Man on the Moon"

Got wood?
Could it be that so many on either side are so far back in the closet that they are fighting the dust bunnies for floor space, and never come out unless some boy-toy is available? One suspects, judging from past behavior of many GOP big shots and the various, serial pedophile indiscretions on the part of the Church, that this might well be the case.....
With video, for those masochistic enough to want to actually see & hear Donohue.

I think there's a couple of reasons the GOP is generally just a tad less wildly homophobic that those wild-ass theocrats that are calling for gay blood. Reasons also why the GOP is more solidly plutocratic than homophobic.
One reason is, of course, genuine nervousness about the next GOP gay hypocrite being "outed" (Gov. Charlie Crist, anyone?) The other reason is that they realize the tide is turning against homophobia. They realize that eventually gay marriage and gay adoptions will be commonplace, legal, and generally accepted with little more than a shrug. (Like the "socialized medicine" of Medicare that they once railed against, but now at least pretend to embrace.)
At that point in the future, they hope there won't be too many bigoted quotes available to hurt them politically. (In many ways, they are fooling themselves, as they've already said far too much, and championed bigotry in ways that will never be forgotten, but even an absurdly forlorn hope remains a hope.)
Fighting a real-guard, constantly retreating battle to delay progress on social issues is something the GOP has been doing pretty consistently since soon after Abraham Lincoln. They're good at it, but it's not all they do.
Now, championing the rich versus the poor by supporting tax breaks for the rich that will supposedly help everyone by boosting "free enterprise" -- that's a different kettle of fish. It's an issue that's never really settled. The front moves back and forth. Supporting trickle-down economics is never completely out of vogue, and always earns the GOP big donations from the wealthy in their base. |
