Poll Question:
To help promote skepticism and critical thinking, you…

Choices:
are an active member of a face-to-face free-thinkers or related society
mock things like the virgin birth at family gatherings, especially during Christmas
wear SFN t-shirts around town
post regularly at SFN and other skeptic sites
post regularly at Christian/conspiracy sites
write "Why not question something for a change?" on public bathroom walls
Friend every prominent skeptic on Facebook, and invite them to play Mafia Wars
blast George Hrab songs on the stereo, with windows wide open
retweet every skeptical message you get
attend skeptical conventions
attend woo conventions and report on them
nothing (you're an "end user")
more than one of the above
other (please explain)

A lot more than one of the above... Including the Facebook/Mafia War answer...

More than one of the above:

* wear SFN t-shirts around town
* post regularly at SFN and other skeptic sites
* attend skeptical conventions (does two visits to Dragon*Con count?)

I also try to inject a skeptical view into conversations with co-workers, and other people, when I get the chance. Quoting the subject line of an article in the newspaper is a perfect vehicle to strike up a casual conversation about a subject I feel needs a dose of skeptical thinking. Then I can follow up with "what's up with that? Such a thing is irrational/illogical/ludicrous, and here's why I think it's so...:"

More than one of the above.

But as for posting at Christian/Conspiracy sites, I used to, but now I no longer bother. Conversing with the doubtful of intellect is futile, and I usually end up banned anyway.

I do. Something like this:

Awesome. So far as I know, this is the first time I've ever been the cause of a spit-take.

I generally spend a lot more time talking to non-skeptics than to skeptics, especially about the plausibility of irrational explanations for things. Most of the time it's about wacky medical therapies but also in the context of food, dietary ideas and allergies. I seem know almost all of the people who suffer from any form of allergy or dietary disorder, if the stats of real incidence are anything to go on. I'm sure most of us could claim the same. A very large proportion of the people I know seems to claim some esoteric allergy or mystifying illness and I spend a lot of time bringing the discussion back down to the real world.

In all cases, I try to draw them towards rationalism rather than heading directly into a confrontation. I used to try the latter approach and although it was entertaining in some cases (at least to me), in others it just leaves them more than ever entrenched in dogmatic refusal to think rationally. So these days I try to pull rather than push.

As I'm older now, I like to think I'm a little more patient than I used to be, though I do object when people expect me to passively accept irrationality. I used to just say nothing until eventually I'd had enough and caused a confrontation. These days I respectfully explain that I can't subscribe to the currently fashionable nonsense and say why.
