Looks like Limbaugh is blaming the unions for the West Virginia coal mine explosion.
Ed Brayton.
Problem: He's flat-out wrong.
There’s a simple reason the union didn’t protect the miners: the Upper Big Branch Mine, like nearly all of the mines under Massey CEO Don Blankenship’s control, is non-union. In fact, the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) “tried three times to organize the Upper Big Branch mine, but even with getting nearly 70 percent of workers to sign cards saying they wanted to vote for a union, Blankenship personally met with workers to threaten them with closing down the mine and losing their jobs if they voted for a union.” |

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

This is true. UMWA hasn't been in Massey mines since the mid-80s I believe. There was quite a large strike against the same company then. The UMWA used to do nationwide strikes to force companies to do things, but they tried to strike only against that company, which didn't really consist of enough workers, so they could hire strikebreakers to fill in, so it didn't really do anything. Since then, they had little success against Massey and membership dropped off, and UMWA doesn't have a presence there anymore.
I'm not sure there is a very strong correlation between this and mining injuries. I very well could be wrong, but mining disasters have been relatively common in the region with and without unions. |

The problem is that his audience takes what he says as gospel. And he's got a huge audience. So of course, they'll believe his Vicodin-addled blather as the unvarnished truth and it will further harden their hatred of unions.
I don't feel like looking it up, but i believe it was P.T. barnum who said that no one ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the American public. |

"What? Oh, oh, 'just rebuild it'? Oh, real [bleep]ing original. And who's gonna give me a loan, jackhole? You? You got an ATM on that torso LiteBrite?" |

This is a good reason to go back to the bad old days of unions, when the stake holding the sign served a dual purpose. If Blankenship threatens to close the mine the workers should pre-empt him and do it themselves, and anyone attempting to enter should face extreme measures. |
