In today's USA Today, there was an op-ed by Buzz Aldrin offering the President some ideas on how to go forward with NASA and America's goals in space.
The op-ed itself was interesting, and, perhaps, worth discussing in another forum (I know that many SFN regulars have differing opinions about manned space travel). But what really struck wasn't the op-ed but rather from the reader comments.
More than once, we find things like:LegalE (0 friends, send message) wrote: 10m ago It's been 40 YEARS since the space program did the moon thing, probably on a closed set ... in any case, the program should go on only for research, not travel for travel's sake - boondoggle | Andjoseph d (0 friends, send message) wrote: 29m ago Yeah, we won the race to the moon. Big deal. What good did it do us? Billons of dollars for what, To put spy, and weather satellites to the point where they are so many, they are just falling out of space.
They lied to us about landing on the moon. The U S government started the space program where they (politicians) would have a endless pot of $ that couldn't be traced by the public.
The Government (U.S) is all about the money, it cares nothing about it's people. The space program is B.S. Wake up people. |
The bolding there is mine. I am stunned that there are so many people out there who actually have doubts about the moon landing. Sure, this is some anonymous internet forum, and these people could be quacks. Or even the same person. But I'm inclined to think that they're not. Moreover, I doubt that these people are like regular moon-landing-hoax followers. Rather, they seem to be the standard "I hate the government (unless it's doing something super obvious for me, and then I pretend it's not the government)" types, of which there are too many in this country as it is. What shocks me is how many of these people buy into ridiculous ideas like this.

After observing the teabaggers, and even before, I am not at all shocked. This s simply SOP to the mindset. They know perfectly well that the moon landing went down as told, but they've got to blather about something. Idiots.......

I gave a talk on this last year to our local skeptics group. From what I've seen the deniers are just about the same as creationists, in that they haven't come up with a new argument in years and they refuse to even listen to the evidence. They are too closed-minded to really bother with, all we can hope to do is educate the rest of society and try to prevent their minds from being poisoned by these idiots. However they do come in handy as a kicking post, when you come home after a bad day at work you can take your frustrations out on them. |

Heh. One of my roomates doesn't believe in the moon landing himself. Good luck trying to convince him; even when he's talking about any other topic it's well-nigh impossible to get a word in edgewise!
