A volcano in Iceland erupted this week. Its volcanic plume is spreading, and now is over Europe.
This is having a pretty big economic impact, as such ash clouds can and have shut down the jet engines of airliners. So most air travel has come to a halt in the region.
I was wondering: Are you Euros seeing the dust in the air? Is it any concern for breathing?

You can spot it from satelite imaging, but so far the vulcanic eruptions are too small to be noticed from the ground up.
At present, the cloud is still at around 5000 m height and therefore hasn't got an effect on health. At some point the cloud will come down, but probably it will have thinned down enough by then to not have too large of an effect.
To really have a noticeable effect on the ground, the eruption would have to be much larger like the 1783 eruption of Laki. The effects of that eruption can be demonstrated in old population mortality records (like the mortality registries of parishes or burial records). So far, the eruption seems to be relatively minor and latest news is that it is already diminshing in strength again. So up to now there's not too much to worry about.
Of course, there is the chance of nearby volcanoes erupting as well. So we'll have to wait and see what happens.
(We just had a seminar on this at work, one of the advantages on working at a university department with research on the health effects of air pollution  ) |

One of the funny things is that at the time of the seminar (about 4 hours ago), air flight from Reykyavik Airport (the capital of Iceland)was still uninterrupted because the wind blows in the direction of the European mainland. So the dust cloud was blown away from Reykyavik 
And indeed, a large eruption would be bad. But it would also be extremely interesting  |

Volcanos are probably the biggest threat to civilization, they may have caused the dark ages(Krakatoa 535AD) and most of the greatest famines in recorded history. The bastards! Breathing in glass dust is so awesome. Iceland isnt likely to blow like that due to its numerous vents, however the island could collapse and Tsunami our faces.
The James Bond Supervillan in me was thinking that if I could control volcanic eruptions I could use them as mountain sized jet engines to destablize Earths rotation or orbit, still working out the details. I'm not too hip on the secret volcano-lair, however the sheer number of ways to kill enemy agents with a volcano is quite tempting.
1. Cooked to death (radiant heat)
2. Landslided to death
3. Melted/vaporized by immersion in lava
4. Posion gas
5. Vaporized by pryoclastic flow
6. Crushed by lava bombs
7. Silicosis from breathing ash
8. Choking on too much ash
9. Blasting by expolsive shockwave
10. Drowning by tsunami
11. Crushed by tsunami/shockwave/Pflow debris
12. Famine/starvation
13. Freezing (from ash cloud cooling)
14. I suppose thirst if all the local water is tainted
15. Glacial/Ash/Mud Lahar
16. Steamed Alive
17. Earthquakes
18. Ground collapse/caldera formation(not likely that you would live til this part)
19. Heavy machinery failure(jet engines choking etc.)

Anyway, I haven't seen anything in the weather thus far. We just has some rain yesterday morning, but the afternoon was ok with partial cloud cover. No ash visible.
