It appears that lightning isn't the only thing that volcanoes can generate.

Day-yamn! That thing really is working hard to put out some "keep away from me!" bad vibes. Next, will there be a green-faced witch flying on a broomstick? |

I notice (via FlightRadar24.com) that at least a dozen flights are presently leaving Europe in the direction of North America. None of them appear to originate in the UK, which is being cautious about reopening it airports.
I suspect that financially desperate airlines are exerting enormous political pressure for a normalization of flights, despite the massively continuing eruptions in Iceland. I hope this does not lead to disaster. |

According to the newspapers the air-space was opened to flight again this morning (Tuesday), at least in the Netherlands.
Europe is contemplating financial support for airline companies that lost money due to the eruptions.
By the way, the pressure is not only financial. It also comes from passengers stuck on airports around the globe, due to the suspended flights.
My guess is that everything will be fine. There will probably be increased surveillance of possible damage to the airplanes during controls on land. So far the test flights on civilian planes have not reported damage, although military airplanes did suffer damage. |

| Oh, I agree that the pressure is also coming from (would-be) passengers. I just wonder if the official British caution about reopening their airports has sound reasoning behind it.
I do think some solid long-term contingency plans should be made, in the case that this eruption continues for months or years, making air travel in Europe (and to and from there) either impossible or very limited. Piston-engine planes, trains, busses, cruise ships; all these must be ready to prevent an economic breakdown in the event Eyjafjallajökull volcano simply keeps on doing what it's doing now.
Even if careful monitoring can get half of Europe planes back in the sky most of the time, that would still remain a catastrophe for air travel. |

Mainly on the smaller airports, national flight (ie, between Scotland and England etc).
Schiphol has opened up, but the number of flights was quickly limited due to the ash clouds. What basically seems to be happening now is that pilots try to fly around/between the ash clouds. This limits the amount of airspace available and hence the number of air movements.
A number of Dutch helicopters have gotten ash in the motors, as well as some airplanes. These are grounded until authorities have figured out whether the ash has done damage or not. |

Ok, just kidding. Here you go.
I bet though, that even if you hovered your mouse over the first link and saw the URL, you still clicked it...

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
