Maybe it will directly affect your children.....or theirs.

Ha! I don't have kids (on purpose)! Yet another good reason for me not to care.

Because if they don't, someone else will.

Not necessarily. My anecdotal evidence being my own hometown. I could go back there and the only contact I would have with the government would be paying my taxes and hunting and fishing licenses. I could go fishing and hunting without ever being interupted except maybe for the DNR....and I know all those guys. What's going to happen? Someone's going to come rolling in with tanks or something?

The problem is that they escalate from there to getting people who see things their way into elected office.

Yes, that is the problem with the squeeky wheels getting the grease...but who cares as long as I don't have to deal with them?

So what happens when some extremist lefty PETA level retard gets put in charge of the Dept of the Interior and starts enforcing all the new federal laws that the other lefty extremists voted into law while you were busy being apathetically happy?

What happens when some crazy rightwing timber industry exec gets appointed to the DotI and starts handing out new logging permits on state/fed owned land, maybe even claims eminent domain on some private lands where you happen to hunt/fish?

Will you still be happy with your apathy? (ohhh, that sort of rhymes, lol)

Interesting you bring this up. Years ago when I was a teenager some dumbass PETA people came to town during hunting season and tied a dummy in human shape to their cars and drove out to the woods to protest while the people were hunting. It was quite humorous when the hunters, who outnumbered the PETA folks, had them surrounded. They left town pretty quickly.

Already happened in the late 19th early 20th century. Those dumbasses just went and clearcut everything. Thanks to the CCC camps the land was re-forested. Now nearly a century later it is a thriving ecosystem once again.

I'm not sure what my point is now.....I just seem to be telling stories....sorry for the rambling.

So what happens when those PETA people show up and are backed by federal law? The hunting community going to try and intimidate them then?

And you see, history can repeat itself. Things could be clear-cut again if the wrong people are in positions of power.

I have another one for you....

Say that extremist rightwingers get control of congress and the presidency for a good long time, long enough to let oil company lobbbyists write the country's energy policy in a secret meeting. Say that these people make the rules for offshore drilling so that companied can save $500,000 each time they drill a well by not installing an additional piece of equipment to prevent massive leaks.(oh, wait, that really happened)

If you were a Lousiana gulf coast fisherman who just had his entire ability to provide for his family taken away by a massive oil spill, would you still be happy that you were apathetic about politics?

Violence and bloodshed would happen.

So what kind of person does it make you that you would sit around in a state of apathy until things got so bad you felt you had to resort to armed resistance?

I should clarify that since there is no link, I can't confirm or deny this. If true, it's a waste of taxpayer money.

That's both an accurate and a really pretty hilarious comparison.

Also (and he may correct any error), our tomk80, who as I recall is affiliated with a center-right party in the Netherlands, seems to line up as pretty much a flaming liberal by US standards.

The whole American political spectrum itself seems to be calibrated considerably to the right of most nations.

With new elections coming up 9th of June (after the cabinet (the current administration) dissolved prematurely again) I currently seem to come out left of center. The reason being that in previous years the mainstream left and right parties had both moved up to the center. Nowadays, the right in the Netherlands has become more right and the left more left. Which is good.

But indeed, generally I'm in the centre of the dutch political centrum, meaning that in US terms I'm a flaming socialist pinko-commie-tree hugger.

It's more like a few hundred thousand of the ruling class support politicians that are batshit insane right, a few hundred thousand support politicians that are just as batshit insane right, but have to give the illusion of being refined, and the rest of us are just out of luck.

Unmm... as near as I can make out, politics in the USA has nothing whasoever to do with making policy choices or anything else involving logic and rationality. What it is about is people attempting to gratify their emotional needs, preferably by fucking someone else over, and a few moneyed assholes working very hard at manipulating those emotional responses by means of the fucking teevee. It's utterly repellent to anyone who is in the habit of trying to think, which suits what passes for a ruling class here just fine.

In other words, politics as practiced here is fundamentally the result of bad toilet training.

Nothing will get fixed until the load of shit in our collective diaper becomes insupportable.
