Does this thing look like it'll fly?

The wings looks like they are double-folded. In such case, the wing span could probably* support flight.

Yes, the wings fold out and there is a vertical stabilizer tail. (I personally don't want to fly it though.) To me, cars are cars, planes are planes.
Now if someone built an actual, functioning Star Trek shuttle craft that really worked and could get you from Earth to Mars on a day trip - well maybe I'd be into that - or a WWI Nieuport 28. |

TV footage today all over the place with the thing flying around like a bird, so I guess it's real, all right. Sticker price $200K. |

I wonder how long it will last in the marketplace as gas prices climb. For that matter, will it have the freedom to fly as often as one would like on their commute? How convenient would it be to have to fly from airport to airport? My guess is it will not be convenient for many people. |

We hear about these things at least once a year in mags like Popular Mechanics, people have been trying to push them for about 80 years. But they always seem to forget one thing - the streets are full of people who can't walk, bicycle, or drive a car safely, why the hell would we want them all in the air? |

Surely you remember the Taylor Aerocar, vintage late '40s?

And this abomination, the unholy union of a Cessna 337 and a Ford Pinto, it crashed killing its designers:

Heh. One of the few deaths in the Pinto that the Ford manufactures didn't have to shell out after a wrongful death suit , I suppose. |

Actually the Pinto exploded after backing into a luggage tram at 5mph. |

This must use airports, which is different than taking off from any place. However this news/project is closer to reality than any of the previous attempts posted so far, to actually producing a viable product. At $200,000 all it really permits is the ability to use one conveyance to get to an airport, fly to another and have ground transportation at a destination. Seems like more trouble than it's worth. I figuring this is not as practical to use as your everyday car, which is what you use now to get to an airport. All this does is eliminate the need to rent a car upon arrival at a distant airport. Hell, why not just leave your wings at the airport and drive around without them. Seeing how you have to go back to the airport to fly again. If it could land and take off from rough terrain that might make it worth while. SS |

About a decade ago the Moller Skycar was being touted as the Next Greatest Thing!
It made some tethered flight tests in 2003, and hasn't done much since other than collect dust and suck in some unwise investors.
And it's something you would never catch me flying, or flying in. You can tell by looking at it that if there was an engine failure you are well and truly screwed. There is not enough wing to provide lift for gliding, and not enough rotor to auto-rotate like a helicopter. The very concept of that type of vehicle should be illegal. |

Its interesting that the flying car remains a silly idea. Though some have gotten into the air, they are basically bad airplanes forced to have road car characteristics which ultimately hinder complete or most airworthy design solutions.
However the seaplane remains a viable design concept. Seaplanes with central hulls are in essence flying boats. Seaplanes with pontoons are in essence flying catamarans - though they're not called that, just float planes. I think this is because the seaplane doesn't sacrifice aeronautics. In other words, its a 100% airplane that can takeoff and land on water, not a ship that turns into an airplane. |
