I am just doing some reading about my favorite place in the world. http://www.hawaiianencyclopedia.com/hanalei-history-part-1.asp
I came across this. The coastal area that is now the site of Hanalei town was once underwater as part of a shallow marine bay. About 4,000 years ago steadily decreasing sea levels revealed the Hanalei coastal plain.
Evidence for decreasing sea levels during the Holocene epoch include elevated marine deposits. In a study entitled Holocene History of Sediment Deposition and Stratigraphy on the Hanalei Coastal Plain, Kauai, Hawaii, the authors write, “Fourteen radiocarbon dates from the regressive boundary in 67 gouge auger cores show a seaward progradation of the shoreline from 4800-4580 cal. year. B.P. to at least 2160-1940 cal. yr. B.P. and probably later,” adding that “the regression on the Hanalei coastal plain is best explained by sea-level fall from a middle-to late-Holocene relative [sea level] highstand predicted by geophysical models of whole Earth lithospheric deformation related to deglaciation.” [Holocene History of Sediment Deposition and Stratigraphy on the Hanalei Coastal Plain, Kauai, Hawaii (Abstract). So shouldn't the possibility of the sea level rising be normal? (Just playing devil's advocate)

I think that very few people claim that changing sea levels would be improbable without human interference. The questions, as far as climate change is concerned, is how much humans are contributing to the rate at which this happens. |

The evidence for global warming is that we (humans) can take all the natural sources of heat and cooling, add them all up, and we get a number that's too small for what our thermometers are reading right now. The difference is most-probably due to human activities.
Based on that, and the changes we can already see and test for, we can predict things like higher-than-natural sea levels, even if sea level fluctuates naturally. |

In Sweden, where I live, land is rising because it's decompressing from the weight of the kilometers of ice-cover from the last ice-age. Hawaii is a geologically active area. Was the water receding because it soaked up some place else or was the land rising because of pressure underneath?
The land/water height ratio is changing, but which perspective is closest to the truth in absolute terms? Like the distance to Earth's center of mass... |
