Does there have to be a reason? I think it's just easier. Just as my father is very good at unintentional offensive remarks against muslims, since he never meets them. He probably doesn't realize that he says quite hateful things about my collegues.
It is much easier to be offensive about people you don't know and never meet, then if they are people you actually work with and count amongst your friends. |

Blame those Duke boys, Bo, Luke and of course David. |

No, not at all. Ignorance has nothing to do with it. I've always thought that the flag symbolizes the current "southern" way of life. It has absolutely nothing to do with the civil war, or anything before 1970 for that matter. It's not that their ignorant, it's that this just isn't what that flag means to them. | But even since the 1970s, that flag has been inextricably tied to slogans such as "the South will rise again" that such a intentional divorce of meaning seems impossible to me.
More importantly, it's a public symbol with a public meaning. I mean, personally, I could decide that "Google" means "bubonic plague," but if I started using such a meaning in public, people would simply think I'm insane.
Try going downtown with a Nazi swastika on a flag, and when you're confronted, explain that before the Germans used it, it was a Native American healing symbol. See how well that's accepted. |

Maybe they think that the confederate flag is prettier.
And of course, it hasn't more stars on it than they can count...

Where I meant "symbolizes to them".

I agree Dave, the flag carries a lot of different meaning to different people. But this isn't what Ebone was asking about: | No, I understand that. I'm saying that even if people are flying the Confederate flag for reasons other than as a celebration of racism, they're never going to be able to escape that perception. And in that light, it's a pretty dumb thing to do. |

There is a young feller here at work that flys the confederate flag. I do not know him very well but I think I will cozy up to him and ask him one of these days. Agreed no matter what it is dumb to be flying the flag unless you live down south. I just so much want to run up to ones of these guys and yell " You live in the North dumbass!!!" |
