My boat is on the rocks. Hurricane Earl broke my boat off it's mooring, monday night, and now my boat sits a the bolder-ed seawall, adorning a landowners back yard. Starboard boarding, can now be done with one big leap to land. I might be able to salvage it, time will tell. Spent yesterday, the day after, trying to get a few loads of tools, food, clothes off and in boxes to store, somewhere.... They'll have a floating crane pick it up and see if they can throw a quick patch on it so it will float again. That would be good. Then it's off to a marina for repair, hopefully. It didn't sink, it does have a long breach (hole), that relocated 3 bulkheads closer amidship.(pushed inside, not good) I can't be accurate now but it about 5 or 6 feet long and it looks like a bomb went off inside. What a mess! Every boater wants a new boat but this isn't the way I would have chosen to get one. I have no insurance. In one word, FUCK! In two words, THIS SUCKS.
I wasn't on the boat, I'm not crazy (that way). Maybe I'll spend my next life, after this one, in Minneapolis far from the sea. Maybe on a lake. I can see, just like before, most of what makes life fun is just newer junk and before you know it, it's old junk. It helps to remember the best things in life... aren't things. The only good thing so far, is hearing some kind people say 'let me know if I can do anything for you'. I will, of course, repay them in kind and not take them up on it. I'll just have take this one day at a time. SS

Bummer, bummer, bummer!

Earl is turning out to be a real nuisance. It's supposed to give the Outer Banks of NC a very near miss (or maybe not, hurricanes being what they are), and idiots will have parties in beach-front houses. That is a tradition that has gotten people killed before.

Hoping that the damage repair isn't too costly and you are back to boat-bumming around the Virgins soon.

SS, sorry to hear about your boat. Maybe it's time to find a rich woman to shack up with for a little while!

Whoa!!! Bummer!!! I lost a place in an earthquake, but it's not the same because I didn't own it. Darn those pesky natural disasters though. SS, here's hoping that getting your life back in order, (including repairing your boat or buying a new one) will not be too costly or painful.

So sorry to hear about your shipwreck, ss. It's all the worse when the craft is your home. I hope you can get it safely floating again, and are later able to make full repairs.

Man, that hurricane really blows.

I'm hoping for a speedy nautical recovery, SS.

Thank you, everyone, for your best wishes and concerns. I'm appreciate the support. I'm going to the Red Cross today and see what they might be able do. Seeing how It was my home, they are the one's who may assist those who loose their home in an event like this. I know nothing but out here there is the "DPNR" (Department of Parks and Natural Resources). They are the people that address issues with the public land. They will address the logistics of getting a crane on a barge to get all the beached boats. They'll be a private party doing that. I hear it might cost $10,000 put my boat in the water, if it can be done but I can't think of that right now. If it can't be refloated, it goes an a barge to somewhere. A barge can't get into the marina so I don't know about that. The only thing I know is something will happen, the boat will be dealt with. I tried and found this. The video under "Great Cruz Bay" shows a little, if it's still posted. I didn't end up on the beach like these boats. My boat can be seen, out in the far distance on the left, right after the first shot of the sandal in the sand, about 60% through. Not much to see. I'll see if I can find other video or pics. FEMA should help with $$ but time will tell.

Trying to get clothes, tools and food off is a bit depressing. It's starting to stink of rotting sea weed/ grasses and salt water. At the start of day three what's left is pretty much useless. That saltwater is like acid to metal after just a few days. The damage to the hull is pretty substantial. The boat might be a total loss. I might get something for the engine, winches etc but only a few grand if that. I'm pretty up beat as I'm still safe , alive and my life has a bit left to play out so this should be interesting to see what will happen. However I'm not up reporting more than I have as it's a bit surreal. I'm staying at a friends house for right now until I make other arrangements. SS

The video in this post, yes? If I'm not mistaken, "the far distance on the left" after the first shot of the sandal is nothing but beach. Your boat's not the one in the far distance on the right with the mast tilted way to the left, is it?

SS, where did you sit out the hurricane; and what were the winds clocked at at St. John's?

Yes Dave it is way out in the distance, mast tilted to the left. The furthest away.
I got some "IMG.pdf " pictures a friend took and emailed to me, as I'm with out a camera now. They are 150 to 250kb in size. I not sure how to post them here. If you or someone could tell me how to post them, I will. Right now I have them saved as separate files, in a folder. I'll have to get the boat rolled on it's port (left) side, gently so I don't damage it more, put a patch with epoxy and biaxial fiberglass cloth over damaged section. Then drag it back into the water. After it's floating in the water, I can move back on. I'll eventually get it towed to a marina but I'll have to wait 2 or three months for the marina to get room. Right now the marina is full of stored boats. They're out of the water for hurricane season, ending Dec 1., and they have limited space now for short haul outs only (up to two weeks). Some bulkheads are separated inside (2 or 3). It will take about a month or two's work in the marina. First, I'll remove the patch, re-fiberglass the hull and replace the separated bulkheads. Then I have to refinish the interior as a bit of the damaged side will have to be cut out, to repair the structure correctly.

I hope this is not confusing the way I wrote it.

I can't live on it until it's back in the water and cleaned up inside but before I get to the marina. Some real friend, has offered to let me stay in their villa that he rents out weekly to tourists. This is our slow season and there are no bookings right now. Of course I'll have to leave if there is a booking. I do have another place but it's 9 miles on the east side and it takes an hour to drive round trip. There is no land line phone, no cell phone coverage or cable, so I'll really be isolated (no internet). SS

I stayed at a friend house on land. I don't know what the highest winds here where. I can say it was a Category 2 about 100mph (165km/h). The island it's self took it well. There were 8 boat off moorings and the next bay over, Chocolate hole, lost all the boat that stayed there. Breaking boat off moorings was it's biggest damage with quite a bit plant damage. This was the worst storm I've seen since 2002, when I got here. SS

SS, about your photos, if you like, email them to me. I can upload them on my gallery site and send you the link for posting. Could make them private with password protect, if you so choose.
