Can someone do us all a favour and smack this stupid lying bitch upside the head? She's had 9 years to learn the facts, but why should she let that get in the way of breeding paranoia? When you keep people in fear it's easier to control them.

I think the most important part of Angle's mistakes is that she's using "the terrorists" as an example of how the U.S. needs to better combat illegal immigration, but all of the 9/11 hijackers came here on valid, government-issued visas. According to the article, the "they came from Canada" canard has been around since 9/12 and is apparently wide-spread, but the implied "9/11 happened because of illegal immigration" idea is a new one to me, and seems to me to be a much more pernicious political lie.
Has any actual or would-be (caught before the act) terrorist entered the U.S.A. illegally? |

The Tea Party seem to be perfectly comfortable just making shit up. Not that politicians haven't done that in the past, but now it seems to be coming more out of ignorance than political maneuvering. I submit that Sharon Angle and many of her contemporaries are just plain stupid... |

I don't want to be too much of a Godwin's Law breaker, but this kind of racist scapegoating shit is straight out of Mein Kampf, and just as paranoic, dishonest, and potentially dangerous. The GOP's Teabaggers are the closest force of any importance in today's American politics to the Nazis of the 1930's. Almost all they lack is a clever and charismatic Leader. (And boy, do they lack those!) |

Time to dust off the old movie "The Wave" and show it to all High-Schoolers. Obviously, almost a generation missed the important lessons it had to teach. I saw it in school, I wonder if it wasn't mandatory part of the High School curricula at the time. |

You seem unimpressed, Robb. Don't you think there's an important lesson to learn here?

Can we let the nazi references go? No one in the U.S. is saying anything near to what the nazi's actually did. |

The Rude Pundit: Sharron Angle Is Running the Most Hateful Senate Campaign Out There:
So what's the proper response to "Man up," the emasculating slogan now being used as a near chant by Nevada Republican Sharron Angle in her campaign speeches? Ever since she said it at her lugubrious debate with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Angle has been acting like an old porn star who just got vaginoplasty and wants to show her newly-tucked pussy to everyone. At a rally yesterday in Vegas, Angle said, "He needs to take some responsibility. He says it is not his fault on the economy. Man up, Harry Reid. He says there is no problem with Social Security. Man up, Harry Reid. He says this war is lost and your general is dishonest. You owe us an apology. Man up, Harry Reid."

| I did not call Teabaggers, or the GOP, Nazis, Robb. What I did was point out real similarities in scapegoating, racist tactics between the Teabaggers and the Nazis of the 1930's.
Think of it this way: Suppose I were a devout Presbyterian. Further suppose I heard a minister at a Presbyterian church preach against the Virgin Birth, saying it was an absurd concept. I might state that, in this matter, this wayward Presbyterian vicar might as well be working from the playbook of the German Rationalist Unitarians. In giving this historical reference, I am not calling the preacher a Unitarian, but simply giving a fairly recent historical source for his kind of thinking.
Likewise, comparing the tactics of Teabagger candidates who use divisive, scapegoating lies, to the Nazis is fair play, I think. The Nazis, after all, perfected this kind of demagoguery within living memory. Of course, most Teabaggers are not Nazis. The Nazis had more orderly rallies, could spell their slogans better, and had fairly consistent (though horrendous) programs.
Teabaggers, it seems to me, resemble Nazis only in their sense of frustrated ethnic privilege, their common paranoia and their search for scapegoats to blame for their own failings or problems. |

| I get it. But why single out conservatives then? They all do use divisive scapegoating lies. Why not acknowledge that and compare the democrates to Nazies? |

Originally posted by Robb I get it. But why single out conservatives then? They all do use divisive scapegoating lies. Why not acknowledge that and compare the democrates to Nazies? | There's no equivalency here to acknowledge, Robb. Fascism is a conservative ideology. The Nazis purged liberals, intellectuals, homosexuals and immigrant minorities. Conservative Republicans are now capitalizing on the same fears and bigotry to demonize the same groups. They stoke hate and racial prejudice. Conservatives routinely use violent rhetoric which is increasingly manifesting as actual violence. You have to be either blind or stupid not to see the similarities between the current situation in this country and 1930s Germany. This is way beyond "politics as usual."

Once upon a time, many of them were quite Nazi-like.The party split largely over slavery, the more moderate ones defecting to other parties. Sound familiar? It should, as it's happening to today's Republicans even as we speak.
