The otherwise pleasant, little city of King, NC is a devoutly Christian one. There's nothing unusual about that except that they have a war memorial. There's nothing unusual about that either -- every wide spot in the road big enough to boast a traffic light has at least one. What distinguishes this one is that it had a Christian flag flying over it in clear violation of the First Amendment. As might be expected, someone ratted them out to the ACLU and the Church/State Separation folks, who were not amused. So, following their advice, the city took it down.

So far, so good except that it pissed of some veterans groups (NC has a scad of these), who took action, procured another flag, whittled out a pole, planted it right smack-dab in front of the memorial, and vowed to defend it to the death.
Veterans stand guard around Christian flag in NC town after it was removed from war memorial

The Christian flag is everywhere in the small city of King: flying in front of barbecue joints and hair salons, stuck to the bumpers of trucks, hanging in windows and emblazoned on T-shirts.

The relatively obscure emblem has become omnipresent because of one place it can't appear: flying above a war memorial in a public park.

The city council decided last month to remove the flag from above the monument in Central Park after a resident complained, and after city leaders got letters from the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State urging them to remove it.

That decision incensed veterans groups, churches and others in King, a city of about 6,000 people 15 miles north of Winston-Salem. Ray Martini, 63, an Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, launched a round-the-clock vigil to guard a replica Christian flag hanging on a wooden pole in front of the war memorial

I didn't know that the Christians had an official flag. Let's buy one and burn it!

At a recent public hearing, roughly 500 people packed the King Elementary School gymnasium, many waving Christian flags. Of more than 40 speakers, no one spoke in favor of removing it.

"We've let our religious freedoms and constitutional rights be stripped away one by one, and I think it's time we took a stand," King resident James Joyce said.
They can get 500 Christians out over a flag issue that does not restrict their religious freedom one iota but I bet if the city needed 10 volunteers to serve food to the homeless they would get 6 people.

They are fighting the wrong fight.

Exactly right, although they would probably get the ten. After all, out of 6,000 people, whatever their beliefs, there will be some with charity in their hearts.

But it is indeed the wrong fight.

Oh yeah, *that* flag (or one kinda like it) that I was forced to put my hand over my heart and recite a pledge to when I was a little kid. I wonder if there are toilet paper versions that I can use put to good use these days.
