I came across this and found it a pretty good read. It's not just any report but from a survivor, in his own words. For anyone who knows, the SR-71 Blackbird is probably "The Greatest Aircraft" of the 20th century. SS

Wow. I've helped launch and recover those a few times, this is something I have never heard about before, thanks for posting it. |

Indeed, wow! Juan R., close friend of mine and then an electronics technician and cameraman for San Francisco's Channel 5 TV, was fortunate enough to have flown, with camera, in an SR-71 in the early 1970's.
Hearing Juan's tale made me extremely jealous. As a side note, at that time, both he and I were Maoist revolutionaries. Somehow, that did not prevent the Air Force from letting him fly the 20th Century's finest aircraft, and it certainly didn't prevent my friend from enjoying the fine ride. |

No problem guys, I thought it was a well written and a fascinating read myself. I know there are aviation fans here and others who would enjoy reading that bit of history. SS |

| Were I a Silicon Valley bilionaire, I would be willing to pay far more to ride the Blackbird than to ride SpaceShipTwo. |

You'd better hope that you don't have claustrophobia, that rear seat is extremely cramped. I couldn't do it. |

| No problem there. I once was a submarine sailor, at age 17 in the Naval Reserve. At 18, I spent two weeks serving on the USS Rock, a cramped and unfortunately named diesel-electric boat. (Nowadays, submariners risk bouts of acrophobia in their giant nuclear ships.) Except for needing room for my stuff, I'm happy enough in small spaces. Anyway, the real confinement on the SR-71 would be the spacesuit. |

Yeah, they take up a lot of space. When I worked at YYZ I used to volunteer to help out with the annual airshow, and the SR-71 was in a few times. I once watched Lt.Col. Maury Rosenberg and his RSO Col. Don Bulloch get loaded and wondered if they would have to jump on the canopy to get Bulloch wedged in, he was a big guy and the rear compartment is very tight. It's a wonder he could turn his head with that helmet on.
I would be fine in a submarine, my claustrophobia isn't that bad. But if I can't get my hands over my head, or really stretch fully in any direction for that matter, I go immediately into panic mode. |

That was a well written report.
I would also strongly recommend the rare but collectible book "The Man Who Rode the Thunder" by William H. Rankin. It is a true story by a jet fighter pilot in the 1950s who ejected at very high altitude over a massive thunder storm system and his extremely wild ride - (which took hours.) Like the SR 71 article, it is very well written with details about his plane and why he ejected and what happened during his incredible free-fall. The book is known to pilots and aviation collectors. |
