I've been reading about that phenomena for the last, couple of days. Thanks for the heads-up on the program!

What counts as "our cosmic neighborhood" anyway?
A Google-search suggests that would be either our planetary system, or Milkyway and the Magellan Clouds. So what would an x-ray observatory find inside our planetary system? Not much... Since there are three astrophysicists in the panel, my bet is a black hole. Possibly a small one closer than Cygnus-X.
Any bets?
What's your guess?

| Well, there has been news that observable evidence that dark matter has been indirectly observed. Maybe they have found a smoking gun? |

Possibly a Milky Way gamma ray burst detected and that we have two weeks left to party hardy.

Sorry Randy, but a GRB would fry us the instant we discovered it, no warning on those puppies. Stupid speed of light... |

Well well well... Two out of three: Black Hole, small one*, but missed the distance by 50 million lightyears. Not bad at all! And considering that Chandra regularily obeserves galaxies billions of lightyears away, a few orders of magnitude still puts my guess "fairly close" on the distance.
Edited to add: * Initial estimations puts the black hole around 5 solar masses, which is about as small as they theoretically come (3.5-4 solar masses). |
