I, of course, being edumacated and not from the States, already knew all of this:
So while Christian crusaders were beheading enemies and tossing their heads like oversized hacky sacks, their Muslim counterparts had a whole honor code that led them to feed the armies of their defeated enemies. |
And historically, they have a hell of a track record. Science and math as we know it wouldn't even exist without Islam. The Islamic Golden Age caused a revolution in virtually every field of human thought, during which they fucking invented algebra -- and advanced everything from geography and exploration to the arts, architecture, philosophy, urban development, medicine and health.
The Muslims actually came pretty damn close to sharing all this brilliance with the truly ass-backward kingdoms of Christian Europe, since the Islamic caliphates blanketed every country they conquered with schools, libraries, public works and the most comprehensive system of social welfare on the planet. In fact, the case has been made that if the caliphates succeeded in conquering all of Europe an Italian Renaissance would have been unnecessary. |
How far a culture has fallen, eh?

Not exactly true.
From Wikipedia: Hellenistic mathematician Diophantus lived in Alexandria and is often considered to be the "father of algebra", writes his famous Arithmetica, a work featuring solutions of algebraic equations and on the theory of numbers. |
I will conscede that Arabic scholars compiled a lot of work from all over the world, and continued expanding algebra from there, but much was done before that. And not necessarily because of Islam, but because of scholars.

True enough, I'll concede that. |

It is a mistake to say that "islam" is responsible for those things. It'd be like saying christianity is responsible for the renaissance just because that was the prevailing religion of the time.

That doesn't stop the christian apologists though; hence this post. |

The Greeks mostly dealt with algebraic problems geometrically, which I'm not sure we would really call algebra in the sense we all know now. They were very limited to the types of problems they could solve, and didn't really have too many generalized methods for large classes of problems, but had to come up with a new strategy for most every problem.
Assuming the works actually belong to the credited people, I think it's fair to give Persians credit for creating algebra. The generality of Khwarizmi feels much more significant to me in creating the foundations of a much more useful body of knowledge.
Don't forget Brahmagupta in India as well, he had some nice results, like a limited form of the quadratic equation. Also more general and useful than much of the work of Diophantus.
It is true that much of the work in the "Islamic Golden Age" was just interpretation of Greek works. It shouldn't be blown out of proportion, but they did learn many good things in the period. Something they definitely invented is cryptanalysis (al-Kindi), which is really the earliest usage of probability I have ever heard of. |
