The Discovery channel promotes garbage again and this time they have a partner.

Share Exclusive: Discovery, Catholic Church team for exorcism series
by James Hibberd

Discovery Channel is teaming with the Vatican for an unprecedented new series hunting the deadliest catch of all: Demons.

The Exorcist Files will recreate stories of real-life hauntings and demonic possession, based on cases investigated by the Catholic Church. The project includes access into the Vatican’s case files, as well as interviews with the organization’s top exorcists — religious experts who are rarely seen on television.

Not content to blather away about such nonsense as hauntings and other superstitious tripe, Discovery happily climbs on the Catholic carousel for a few brisk rounds of demon hunting. Whaddaya wanna bet that they won't catch a single one?

I plan on watching at least the first show just to see how they work it, but I suspect that it'll be the same as the rest; deadly serious narration with possibly/probably a little church indoctrination thrown in. I'm sure there will be weeping "victims" of demon posession and testimonials to the brave priests who unpossessed them.

But y'know, I've always had a question about this: Why?

Why should any self-respecting demon bother to possess some hapless and confused gob of meat when there is so much real evil in the world to play with? Hell, the Church itself could keep a whole host of demons happily busy for centuries, and has -- albeit not the species of demons they would have us imagine.

So, Discovery lowers the bar another notch. I don't know how low they can take it, but even their motorcycle building shows have gotten sucky. One of them at least, American Chopper, has degenerated into a fucking soap opera.

To their credit, though, they do manage to turn out some very good documentries, so we'll just have to wait this pandering to religious drivel out. When it's over, perhaps they'll once again come up with something worthy of praise.

More and more, I feel like Discovery and History are catering to the masses. Shows like Ancient Aliens and Ghosthunters have little business on channels like this, but they appear because they make money. Which says something about viewership, and not a good something at that.
