Holy shit. This is nuts.
"The updated knowledge we are sitting on now is at least 80," police chief Oystein Maeland told a news conference. "We can't guarantee that won't increase somewhat."
Hundreds of young people were attending the Labor Party youth event at the camp on Utoya island in a lake near Oslo when the gunman attacked. |
TV2, the country's largest broadcaster, identified him as Anders Behring Breivik, 32, describing him as a member of "right-wing extremist groups in eastern Norway." Shortly thereafter, The Telegraph newspaper of London reported the same information, quoting Norwegian Justice Minister Knut Storberget. |
Shit, the guy dressed as a cop to pull this off.
At least 84 people died when a gunman opened fire at an island youth camp in Norway, hours after a deadly bombing in the capital, Oslo, police say.
Police have charged a 32-year-old Norwegian man over both attacks.
The man dressed as a police officer was arrested on tiny Utoeya island after an hour-long shooting spree. The search for other possible victims continues.
The Oslo bombing killed at least seven. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said the attacks were "like a nightmare". |

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

According to reports this morning (and I'm a bit behind so perhaps this has been discussed...), the gunman was:described as a religious, gun-loving Norwegian obsessed with what he saw as the threat of multiculturalism and Muslim immigration to the cultural and patriotic values of his country. | In situations like this, I feel like the truth is that he was mentally ill, and the religion/anti-Muslim sentiment was just the vehicle that he used to justify (in his mind) his actions; if he had had a different background or upbringing, he no doubt would have used some other excuse-- a talking Satanic dog, Jodie Foster, whatever-- that would have led him down the same path.
That said, it will be interesting to see how this plays out among those (particularly in the US) nationalistic, gun-loving fundamentalist Christians who love to pile it on when there is Muslim-led terrorism or extremism... |

I am not surprised by this .Unfortunately these kind of things are inevitable when mentally ill people can get access to guns. |

Well, guns aren't the only way to kill a whole lot of people very quickly. A car can also do the trick. Or a home-made bomb. Poison. Or a fire started in the "right" sort of circumstances. Although I think guns are a frequent method of choice for nutjobs like this since they can cause so much carnage so quickly and there is something probably appealing about the image of striding into a place and open firing (just think of how bad-ass the final fight scene in The Matrix is.) I don't think there is any safety from the occasional killer nutjob. Thankfully there are not many of them, and the odds of being killed young in some other, much more mundane and innocent way is much more likely. And the odds of living to a respectable, old age and dying of natural causes is even more likely. So it goes. |

How does everyone feel about handguns?
The fact is these weapons are designed to kill people. Therefore if they are sold, should we really be shocked when people get shot? On the other hand, guns exist in the world whether legal or not. So people should have a right to defend themselves with equal force. |

The guy who shot Reagan believed Jodie Foster was in love with him and tellin him what to do or something. Which is ridiculous because everyone knows she's a lesbian.
EDIT:
it was the other way round, he did it to impress her. Still ridiculous. She's a lesbian. |
