Dave. They have one guy in Montreal willing to press charges and testify against him. He has to have made a death threat against the person in order for the charge to stick. Tim Farely has asked for other people in Montreal to step up with the stipulation that a death threat against them has been made. That's what the cops are asking for. They can proceed with one person, given all of the mail and posts that can be produced from around the world, but another person in Montreal would be even more damning. | I understand. I just thought people might be interested in the charges Markuze might be facing. But shit. I don't know why it has to be a person from Montreal? It seems to me that anyone in Canada should do. But there you go... | I don't know, either. In the US, making threats across state lines opens one up to Federal investigation and prosecution. Maybe the FBI has been waiting for some local police (like in Montreal) to take Markuze seriously.
Or... what sort of extradition treaty does the US have with Canada, now? Wasn't Canada a destination for Vietnam-era draft dodgers?
Also:I don't know if all of you can see this. But Dennis has taken to offering to give up doing what he does if everyone backs off and I suppose if charges are not filed. This was sent to a few people via twitter. One of them was Tim Farely. "You stop pursuing us and we’ll stop pursuing you and we will forgive and forget."
Here's a link to his tweets:
https://twitter.com/#!/johnhog39399959 I'm sure if you have twitter you will be able to see it. He knows he's in deep doo doo... | I'm not on Twitter, but I can see the tweets just fine.
And he's making more threats, that's all:we're willing to give you guys a way out... we don't war with you and you dont want war with us 59 minutes ago He's calling himself "us" in an attempt to make himself appear more formidable. That's not backing off, that's a challenge.but it is important for you to recognize that this had to be done... out of my hands... 58 minutes ago He's claiming it's not his fault, he couldn't have not done what he did. If he's ill, that may be true, but it's not in any way apologetic or indicative of responsibility. There's no way that anyone reading the above could reasonably think that Markuze would meet his end of this offered "deal." If his actions were beyond his control before, why would anyone think that he can reign himself in now?we are giving you an opportunity of a way out from this NIGHTMARE we are now in.... 51 minutes ago Sure, it's now a nightmare for him. It's always been about him, though. So long as he didn't escalate things, the people he was threatening weren't in nightmares themselves. It's a nightmare of his own creation, come back to bite him. He's just projecting.don't disturb us anymore and we promise to leave you alone to live your lives in peace 47 minutes ago Last, this is another clear threat. A plain reading is that if people don't do as he says, he'll continue to harass them. But the people he's threatened didn't "disturb" him in the first place, so how is this not simple extortion?
Hell, instead of vague threats to harm a business if people don't cough up "protection" money, he's instead threatening a nightmarish war if people don't leave him alone. But now that the police are involved, and there's someone local willing to press charges, "disturbing" Dennis Markuze is not under the control of at least two of the people that Markuze is Tweeting to. Kyle VanderBeek (for example) certainly cannot stop the criminal investigation, even if he wanted to, despite the fact that he started the petition that finally got the cops interested.
I can only think that these Tweets are just going to cause Markuze more trouble, if he's actually "JohnHogu39494949." After all, it could be someone trying to muddy the waters or just play pranks. |

Farley is sending the police the screenshot of the tweets. And yeah. He wants people to back down. But he's also using threats to do it. What's important is only a couple of hours ago he was still only threatening and not offering to stand down. He's scared. |

There is no doubt the police have been in contact with our fanatic fatale. I would love to be a fly on the wall during that meeting with him trying to explain his actions and all. SS |

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

I like the comments mocking the guy who made the statement
From Alexander Cornswalled: "David Mabus (Dennis Markuze) is a deep cover liberal whose goal is to mock conservatives and make us look like psychotic lunatics."
One of the comments: I think Alexander Cornswalled just blew his deep liberal cover.

Just so you know, aside from a few tweets more or less apologizing to specific people on twitter, Dennis has ceased his spamming ways, at least presently. It's very quiet out there, which is a good thing.

From PZ:I have heard however that he has actually been taken into custody and brought before a judge, and that he’s not responding well. I’m hoping that he gets the psychiatric attention he desperately needs: I don’t want him hurt, I want him better. The Montreal police are reported to be planning to issue a press release in the next day or two. |

Tim Farley's blog:
Case Study: How a notorious spammer was brought down via Twitter
Today the Montreal Police announced that an arrest has been made (in French here) in the “Mabus” case. It wouldn’t have happened but for Twitter. This post explains how.
Twitter has been around for five years now, but there is still much confusion about what it is good for. How can you post anything useful in 140 characters? Isn’t it just people posting what they had for lunch? It’s a massive time waster. Those are typical complaints.
And yet there are several thousand self-proclaimed skeptics actively using Twitter quite effectively as a means of communication and organization. I quite like it myself. Unlike some complicated multi-purpose websites like Facebook, Twitter is dead simple. And you can do amazingly useful things with it.
“Like what?” you might ask. Well in the last week the science, journalism, skeptic and atheist communities on Twitter organized to pressure a law enforcement agency to take action on someone who has been a copious source of spam and death threats on the Internet for at least 15 years. Todays arrest came about in under 10 days from the first moves.
I think the sequence of events of how this came together are quite interesting, and perhaps an object lesson in online activism. As it was happening I was capturing links to the relevant posts so I could document how it came about. Read on… |

The RCMP and Montreal police ignored cybercrime while demanding new powers to fight cybercrime
Canadian cops claim they need new “lawful access” laws to deal with online crime. But the case of Dennis “David Mabus” Markuze shows that when it comes to the Internet, our police are reluctant to use the powers they already have.
Markuze has allegedly been spamming atheists and scientists with online abuse and death threats for over 15 years. Here’s one example among thousands... |

The diagnosis is in:The court-required month-long psychiatric evaluation of Dennis Markuze is complete, and the diagnosis is "Bi-polar, compounded by alcohol and substance abuse". He is now in a substance abuse rehab center, with another court date scheduled for 2 December. |
