I dropped Filthy a note to see how he is because he hasn't posted in so long. Here is his reply:
Yeah, pretty much. Unfortunately, I can no longer partipate at SFN because every time I get on the site, I get a virus like some sort of electronic yersinia pestis. I think I'm taking a chance opening your e, so be comfortable that I went away pissed at some asshole, not the site.
On a happier note, I'm being appointed Herpetologist Some-Damned-Thing by the Museum of Life Sciences in Raleigh, NC. the gig pays nothing but then, I don't have to do any work beyond a bit of writing now & again, and advising. Currently, I'm working on the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.
Hey, it's great to hear from you! Please pass on an "I love you all" to the participants of the fray. Perhaps, sometime, I'll be back to further lower the quality of SFN's discourse. depends on whether or not my stupid computer will bubos up again.
Illegtimi non carborundun, my brother!

I replied:
Hey!
Congratulations on the job. Sounds like fun! Don't get bit or get carpral tunnel or anything! You hold the record as being the only person bit by a rattlesnake in chat. And I'm pretty sure that recored is safe.
Can you describe this virus thing? There is a link somewhere that causes me to get a warning, but I proceed anyway. Dave tried to track it down, but it doesn't seem to be effecting any of our computers, and it seems to be benign. But it would be helpful if you could describe what happens.
And yeah. I'm like a mother hen. I get worried when a member of your standing just goes AWOL.
After all of these years, I think I'm pretty much impervious to attempts at grinding me down. Or I'm already ground and what's left is still has some life left in it. Dunno... But you know. I never was the mixer that some of you guys are. Hell! I am a founder of SFN and can't come close to yours or Dave's post count!
Our old friend Doomar payed us a visit last week. Just left some bible verse and ran. Apparently he's lost the ability to form sentences of his own...
Anyhow, hopefully you will be back soon. Maybe we can solve this virus thing.
Thanks for letting me know you're (pretty much) okay.
Oh... Give me permission and I will post part of your letter on the site. I'm sure it's better coming from your voice than mine, if you see what I mean.
Take care old friend,
David |
To which he replied:
It is my fond hope that I keep that prestigious record forever. Snakebite hurts and I wouldn't wish it on (almost) anyone.
If my fading memory serves, that was a small, prairie rattlesnake. Once again, I got stupid.
Incidentally, my title is Associate Herpetologist Emeritus. Lofty, eh?
I wish I could help with the virus but as I've stated before, I am a computer cretin. But what it did was to shred McAfee and shut the computer down, leaving only, I assume, a phony windows virus alert. The box would do nothing else.
I like Doomar. Sorry I missed him. I like anyone who is crazier than I am.
These days, I consider all of my whitings to be public domain. Use any and all that you want. Eventually, I will send along a short article on the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake in NC. The museum's got to approve it first, then it will be made into a plaque mounted to the enclosure that houses a very large specimen that I donated sometime back. the screed's still a work in progress.
It's all very exciting-- a pity there's no money in it.
Heh, nobody will ever catch up to Dave's post count. He likes to argue even more than I do.
What has become of Halfmooner? I've been worrying about him for a long time.
Anyhow, 'till then.....
Phil |
I'll keep you all informed. One thing I should note is that neither @tomic or Dave can find a virus, and @tomic thinks the problem is with filthy's computer.

It's good to hear that Filthy is doing well. Pass along my greetings if you can.
I have also been wondering what has happened to Halfmooner. I have taken to living vicariously through him. I hope we don't see him on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries or anything! |

That's filthy! It is good to know he's OK. The virus issue is a bit strange though. SS |

Wonder if his virus problems are related to what happened to me last night in chat? Easily gotten rid of, fortunately, but I'm still mad at McAffee so I'm using some free stuff recommended by "PC World" for now. |

| We have two very competent people who also administrate this site and actually know something about code and viruses, and both of them say "no virus." |

Filthy.....
Would a few bucks (3-4 digits) help solve the computer problem? If so, please send me an e-mail at bngbuck@roadrunner.com , and maybe I can help.

Must have been some other source then. Just an unhappy coincidence

@tomic made the suggestion, but it could be that they figured out what to do on their own. Filthy's latest:
My son-in-law did exactly that; formatting the hard drive and rebuilding the whole thing. he also installed a new browser and security. I am relieved to know I can (cautiously) return from the madness of the actual world.
I'm hip to the Dennis situation and signed PZ's petition the other day. That boy needs help bad!
Sooooo, I'll drop by and say "hi" sometime this weekend.
