So why was a study of high speed rail in China part of your master's thesis? Because of the realtime communication between rail engine and intelligent track? |

Nope. The faux company was moving production from Hangzhou to Shanghai. For continuity of management, I suggested that many high speed rail options existed between the two points but wondered if the cost per trip would not have to be subsidized by the business. (cheapest ticket was $13.50 American one way) |

And your conclusion?
From what I understand, high-speed rail is better for regional use instead of trying to supplant air travel for cross-country trips. Quite obviously, the less stops that the rail makes, the faster it goes. But then that necessitates inter-modal transport.
Can't high-speed rail get up to speed faster as well as stop more quickly? Also, Europe removed at-grade crossings, allowing trains to pass over-under roads without lowering speed.
Maglev is even better (with stops-starts), but the capital investment is larger and regular rail can be mixed-use (light-rail, freight, etc). |

Conclusion is that it was worth subsidizing it for the first two years of the five year plan and assumed that the managers would be able to relocate in that time or would be making enough to afford the trip each day.
Trip took 45 mins. |

Groovy.
Too bad such a rational argument would be considered "socialism" here in the good ol' US of A. |
