Here's today's news item, from Science Daily:Great Apes Make Sophisticated Decisions: Research Suggests That Great Apes Are Capable of Calculating the Odds Before Taking Risks
ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) — Chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas and bonobos make more sophisticated decisions than was previously thought. Great apes weigh their chances of success, based on what they know and the likelihood to succeed when guessing, according to a study of MPI researcher Daniel Haun, published Dec. 21 in the online journal PLoS ONE. The findings may provide insight into human decision-making as well.
. . . | Now, the facts Behind the News:
Great apes were always very skilled at calculating odds. In fact their skill at gambling lead casinos throughout the world to ban great apes in the late 1960's. Called somewhat erroneously "Monkey-Gamblers", these anthropoids had until then enjoyed fame and fortune, especially in the so-called Golden Age of Monkey-Gambling, the 1950's.
