Most of us have some Human genes, study finds.
Artist's reconstruction of how scientists now think a Human female may have appeared.
Cur Tain for National Geographic News Published May 6, 2010
The next time you're tempted to call some oaf a Human, you might want to take a look in the mirror. According to a new DNA study, most neanderthals have a little Human in them—at least 1 to 4 percent of a person's genetic makeup.
The study uncovered the first solid genetic evidence that "modern" neanderthals—or Homo neanderthalensis—interbred with their Human neighbors, who mysteriously died out about 30,000 years ago. What's more, the Human-modern neanderthal mating apparently took place in the Middle East, shortly after Humans had left Africa, not in Europe—as has long been suspected.
"We can now say that, in all probability, there was gene flow from Humans to modern neanderthals," lead study author Ed Green of the University of California, Santa Cruz, said in a prepared statement.
Professor Ed Green ponders a Human skull.
That's no surprise to anthropologist Erik Trinkhaus, whose skeleton-based claims of Human-modern neanderthal interbreeding—previously contradicted with DNA evidence—appear to have been vindicated by the new gene study, to be published tomorrow in the journal Science. Most of us have some Human genes, study finds.

Thanks, Thor and Randy! Please note that, while this was probably one of my least-bad ideas, I wrote only a small part of it. The bulk was from a portion of an article in National Geographic.
My idea started with looking at some of the wonderful sculptural reconstructions of Neanderthals that now exist, and mentally remarking, "They look so alive! How could I use 'em?"
Then I though of the idea of how different things might be if Neanderthals, not humans, had won the survival contest. Really, I figured, there's no way of guessing. So for my purposes I next made the assumption that in a Neanderthal-populated modern world, everything might (at least as a default as reasonable as any other alternative) be just the same as ours, but a bit hairier, less chinny, and with bigger brows. The rest was a quick search, minor text manipulation, and some serious hours of very fun Photoshopping.
Now I have to figure out how and if there could be a sequel, because fresh ideas are so rare and make my brain hurt. |

Having waded through these fora for some time now I am pretty sure the human gene hypothesis is hokum - self included, and at the top or bottom or the gene pool if you will. |

| I personally deny having any Human genes. What an ungodly insult, these atheistic scientists saying were are even partially the descendants of those skinny, crafty, sneaky latecomers! Our ancestors got out of Africa while the getting was good. The puny Humans simply couldn't compete with us stronger folk when they finally turned up. |
