A young Bill Gates?

Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Eph 5:15-17)

Hint: This person is a Knight. In becoming a Knight, he made a promise of obedience to the ruling Prince of a small, theocratic European country. (Not the Vatican, by the way.)

That leaves it down to two people. I think.

No, and I'm now sorry for my gibe that the Jeffrey Dahlmer guess was "not really all that far off." This person is not a serial killer, as far as I know.

Hint: When a son of this person and his spouse died soon after birth, the couple slept with its corpse between them overnight in the hospital, then brought the baby's body back home and introduced it to their other children.

BINGO! And congratulations yet again, Convinced!

In 2004, Rick Santorum and his wife, Karen Garver Santorum, were inducted as Knight and Dame of Magistral Grace in the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta. In their inferior class of the Knights and Dames, one need not take an oath, but must "promise" poverty, chastity, and obedience (to the Prince and Grand Master of the order).

Though the Knights of Malta have no regular territory since Napoleon threw them out of Malta, they have diplomatic relations with 104 nations. The Order has two properties within Rome that exercise extraterritoriality granted by Italy, and the Knights and have observer status at the UN. The Knights of Malta also have their own military corps.

I understand that it's either illegal or considered bad manners for an American to accept a British knighthood. Does this traditional ban not also apply to other nations' orders of knights?

Though Santorum has promised his obedience to a "foreign prince," as far as I know this matter has not been raised during this Presidential campaign as a question about his loyalty to the United States.

Foreigners who become citizens of the US must make the following pledge, though apparently the bit about foreign princes and potentates is no bar to potential Presidents:
I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.

US citizens may not accept full foreign Knighthoods as those titles require fealty to the assigning sovereign. They may accept honorary titles. (Colin Powell has an honorary KBE)

As long as Santorum accepted an honorary title (which, per British custom is not entitled to the "Sir" nomenclature), he's OK. If it is a full Maltese Knighthood, it requires a pledge of fealty and gets him in trouble. It could be considered a prima-facia case of voluntarily surrendering US Citizenship. This would exclude him from the list of candidates for President.

The Knights of Malta themselves, at least, seem to take their knighthoods very seriously, and not just as honorary titles. I do recall now that the officially honorary knighthood opinion is one offered by the Brits. Whatever the legal status of a US citizen (and Presidential candidate) being subject to a foreign prince may be, I seriously doubt anyone is going to try to enforce any law against Santorum.

But this situation certainly does raise a question that should be legitimately asked of him: If Santorum were given a command by His Most Eminent Highness Fra' Matthew Festing, the Cardinal-ranked Prince and Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, and that command were to conflict in any way with the Constitution, which would he obey?

It's a valid question, especially since Santorum has condemned John Kennedy for JFK's (video) statement about the total separation of Church and State. Many Americans in 1960 were worried that the first Catholic President would be a puppet of the Pope. Would Santorum be a puppet of his Grand Master, or a creature of the Pope for that matter? He should at least be asked.

Not very.

The "so help me God" crap was inserted circa 1954-1956 period. The US Red Scare was in full bloom and the shaved apes in Congress decided that it would be best to frame the Republic vs Communism as a God vs atheism type of thing.
