I need some advice. My wife wants to go to a chiropractor to see if they can help with a health issue she has been dealing with for a couple of years now and I do not have a good feeling about it.
My problem is I have looked on the internet and tried to sift through the debate on both sides. I have found that most people that go to one think that it helped them but I can't find much scientific studies on the subject that are not associated with some chiropratic association. Does anyone know of any independant studies on the effectivness of chiropractors?
My other issue is that her good friend goes regularly and it has helped her and that has influenced my wife on the subject. My wife is in a situation where she has had her condition for a couple of years and is starting to look to alternative procedures not that she believes them but she is to the point where she wants to at least try them just in case. She is getting tired of feeling bad so I am conflicted as to what to tell her about the chiropractor.
Have any of you dealt with a situation like this with a loved one? Any advice would be appreciated.

These links are obviously a rundown of how skeptics view chiropractic as therapy. That said, some people do find relief from the treatments. But it's likely they could have found the same relief from physical therapy or a good massage. A thing about friends... It's hard to judge whether a particular therapy was actually effective in some cases, because some pains just run their course. If a person feels better after doing something that is not effective, they will often still credit the fix with the therapy. I wouldn't rule out efficacy altogether. But there are dangers to chiropractic that would give me pause before ever going to one.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.
Why not question something for a change?

There are different problems that different chiropractors treat. And the treatments vary in "severity" depending on who you visit.
I've had adjustments to my back because of back-aches from sleeping on a sofa for three nights in a row. The effect was immediate. The connection between my pain and the point of "attack" from the chiropractor was obvious: pain in the back, adjust the spine. However, I wouldn't go to one in hope of curing a sinus problem... or carpal tunnel.
So, without knowing more about your wife's condition, I can't make any recommendations. I prefer getting a good massage every now and then.
