Also, I just realized that Michelangelo messed up a crucial detail on David's anatomy... |

The Cardiff Giant was a hoax by atheist George Hull, perpetrated in 1868 and 1869. Hull had gotten into an argument with a Methodist preacher about the Bible's claim that . . .Genesis 6:4
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. |
So Hull had a huge, crude statue made from stone, age-treated it, then buried it on a plot of land. The next year he hired men to dig a well on that spot. They dug and innocently found the Giant.
Hull initially just wanted to show up that preacher with a hoax. But the Cardiff Giant began to have a bit of life of its own. Soon people were flocking to see "petrified giant." And paying to do so. PT Barnum offered $50,000 for the Giant, a fortune in those days. But the syndicate that had bought the Giant from Hull for $23,000 refused. So Barnum had a guy sneak over and make a plaster cast of the Giant, and soon was exhibiting his own plaster fake of the fake. |
