Hint: In one of his works, this "face" demonstrated a sort of special affinity with three people. One of them was (among other things) a mathematician. |

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

| You are correct, Kil! I finally found someone you hadn't been photographed with! Yes, Douglas Hofstadter, who wrote the marvelous book, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (named for the three persons mentioned in my hints). Years after reading G.E.B., I happened to be making an attempt at writing a heuristic computer program (one capable of learning). I was writing in BASIC, and I was stumped. I suddenly realized that the programming language I was using would not allow recursion (one of Hofstadter's topics in G.E.B.). I ran out and upgraded to a version of BASIC that would allow recursion. Without that concept from Douglas Hofstadter, I'd still be hacking away at that program.
Then a couple-three years ago, I was at Stanford to listen to Daniel Dennett. I was in the front row, and got to talking with a guy in the next seat. I asked him his opinion of when the "Technological Singularity" might come about. (This is a notion that Ray Kurzweil promotes.) The fellow sort of winced and told me it's most likely there'd be no such thing.
Only months later did I realize that I'd been chatting with Douglas Hofstadter.
To Hofstadter, the use of analogy in thinking is just about the most important thing there is. |
