Oops! I posted another hint before I saw your correct answer, OFfC. You got that right, based only upon the rather unusual, clean-shaven image of Gould! Congrats!

Stephen Jay Gould was an evolutionary biologist of great influence both within science, and as a first-class popularizer of science. His greatest accomplishment was his (with Niles Eldredge) idea in 1972 of "Punctuated Equilibrium" as a major way evolution operates. Though still controversial, at the very least the idea gave thinking about the process of evolutionary theory a damned good, rattling rethink.

Gould also proposed (as a philosophical, rather than scientific idea) that religion and science composed two "Non-Overlapping Magisteria" (NOMA) that (in principle at least) do not conflict. That idea is hotly debated to this day, with "Gnu atheists" like Dawkins and others taking the opposite viewpoint.

My "hint" graphic was supposed to point to the NOMA notion.

The background image of the OP was from a hi-res photo of the Dalai Lama. I pasted a high-res face of Gould over it. Lucky for me, the lighting was nearly identical for both images, making a wonderful match.
