All right, you fucker: How would you have wanted to phrase that then? I notice you didn't explain just how you'd have phrased that sentiment in your "apology" of yours.

My take on this is that Cardinal George Pell has been trying to send out signals to Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis by paralleling their theme that the Germans were the "real" victims, and by making disparaging remarks about the Jews that he could later "clarify."
In both cases, he's set up his "errors" very deliberately in advance. The deniers will see him as an ally, while he's given himself a rear trench to retreat to when his words are attacked by others. See, he can say, the Jews of that period were technologically and culturally primitive compared to their neighbors. No fault of their own, they were a simple pastoral people is all. Sorry for misusing the word, "intellectual"! My bad.
And as for the Germans suffering more from the Holocaust than the Jews, he'd say, Oh, sorry! I meant God smote the Germans with the D-Day invasion, and they lost the war, while the Jews went on to create Israel!
As with so many antisemites and racists, who know that much of the general public loathes and reviles their views, they can very cautious, often using words with double meanings, one meaning for their intended signal, the other for their retreat position. One needs to looks at the totality of what they are saying, and sift carefully for clues, while not becoming too paranoid.
In reality, the Cardinal is making every signal he can of his antisemitism without instantly giving away his tricksy game. |
