Hint# 1: For the sake of science, as a young man, he wasn't everything he appeared to be.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

Very good, On fire for Christ! Yes, that's the face of Steven Shaw, best known by his professional name, Banachek the professional stage mentalist.

Born 1960 in England, Banachek was (as alluded to by Kil in his Hint #1) a very young man when he served as part of Project Alpha, a deviously clever hoax designed by James Randi in 1979 which Shaw and Michael Edwards tricked scientists at Washington University (in St. Louis, Missouri) into thinking they were actual psychics.

The hoax might well have been considered professional misconduct had it been perpetrated by scientists, but Project Alpha was carried out by skeptical non-scientists. It served to expose the gullibility and poor experimental protocols of the Washington University research team. The techniques of Project Alpha were later used by Randi to expose faith healer Peter Popoff, when Popoff healed a man posing as a woman with uterine cancer.

As a stage mentalist, Banachek has designed some of the best tricks of mentalism and stage magic, including a "buried alive" trick and various tricks he has taught to other professionals, including Penn & Teller, David Blaine, Lance Burton, James Randi and Criss Angel.

Banachek is member of and often works with the James Randi Educational Foundation. He maintains his own Web site, "Banachek: Miracles of the Mind".
