I don't think knowledge has much to do with it; at least with the "leaders" of the creationist movement. Remember the statement of faith that those people are required to take

By definition, no apparent, perceived or claimed evidence in any field, including history and chronology, can be valid if it contradicts the scriptural record. Of primary importance is the fact that evidence is always subject to interpretation by fallible people who do not possess all information.

By signing such a pledge, doesn't a person explicitly reject "knowledge of basic science," which fundamentally is a process of letting physical evidence lead one to truths, whatever they may turn out to be?
