Imagine having your only Internet signal coming to you from several kilometers away by WiFi. Now, imagine that signal being cut off regularly by typical tropical storms throughout the year. But his is not just a typical time of year, this is the wet season in the Philippines. Right now, the south-west monsoon storms are streaming along the South China Sea from the south-west towards the north-east, while typhoons are forming in the Pacific near Micronesia and heading toward this island nation.

This season two typhoons so far have come out of the east and swerved to mostly miss the Philippines. The latest is now a supertyphoon, and is headed towards Japan. Meanwhile, though the monsoons are quite wet enough, a tropical storm seems to be forming in the South China Sea. My city of Baguio is right in the middle of all the action, with rain coming down heavily, though intermittently. The weather is so confused at this location in the middle that's it's impossible to tell if the present rain is part of the supertyphoon, part of the new tropical storm, or simply the monsoon. But the result's the same, my Internet connection, never reliable, is up and down, up and down.

Tropical storm, monsoon, or supertyphoon? Who cares?

So today I was listening to John Lennon's "Imagine," and I was indeed imagining. The lyrics began to transmute in my head, like a mutating earwig. This mournful doggerel resulted:

Imagine there's no I-bahn
You can't get on the line
No Basement Cat below us
No quotes for which to mine
Imagine World News Daily lying to their cats

Imagine there's no IPs
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to scroll or click for
And no trolling too
Imagine all the people staring at dark screens

You, you may call
Me a whiner, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll have WiFi
Access, then see what storms can do

Imagine no cyberstalking
I wonder if you can
No FaceBook, tweets or LOLcats
No brotherhood of spam
Imagine all the people having to read books

You, you may call
Me a whiner, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll have WiFi
Access, then see what storms can do

Biology is just physics that has begun to smell bad.” —HalfMooner
