I saw a trending article about the "first genetically modified" babies being born from the Daily News this week (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-43767/Worlds-GM-babies-born.html) -- several blogs mentioning it, but that's the only source I could find, which made me doubt the story.

However, on one website someone linked this story at CNN:
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/TECH/science/05/05/US.genes/

The same scientist, same institution, even some of the same numbers are here. As far as I understand (which is very little), the science seems the same as well -- but, from 2001:

Cohen wrote in the British journal Human Reproduction that this was the "first case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal health children."

Here's an excerpt from the 2012 story:

Writing in the journal Human Reproduction, the researchers, led by fertility pioneer Professor Jacques Cohen, say that this 'is the first case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal healthy children'.

So, what's going on here? The Daily Mail story isn't dated, so I can't tell if it's just a case of social network/reddit necromancy, or something more?

This place dates it as June 27 -- wonder how they got a date?

That one links to this one: http://naturalsociety.com/worlds-first-genetically-modified-babies-created-in-us/

Which links the Daily Mail but seems to have pulled the date out of no where.

Turns out if you search for the story on the Daily Mail, you get a 2001 date:

Bloggers making up dates I see...

Edited to fix overly long link that was messing up the page view in the thread.

If you view the HTML source code of the original article, you can find this line in the headers:
meta property="article:modified_time" content="2001-05-05 13:51:56 UTC"
The research article that the news article was based on is Cytoplasmic transfer in assisted reproduction. Haven't read it all yet, myself.

I wouldn't hit a dog in the ass with the Daily Mail:

Forget global warming - it's Cycle 25 we need to worry about (and if NASA scientists are right the Thames will be freezing over again)

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

To be fair, the Daily Mail didn't do anything wrong here (beyond possibly plagiarism, but that's beside the point), just the websites referencing it.

I know it's the Silly Season, but even so, writer Michael Hanlon must be held responsible for either deliberately distorting the news, or being unprofessionally negligent in researching it. And for plagiarism. He's presumably a science reporter, after all. But the blame really goes all the way to the top, with how The Mail does atrocious journalism.

You folks here got to the bottom of the matter, after all. And you weren't even paid to do so.

What was distorted or wrong here? It seemed to essentially match the CNN article. The only distortion was websites picking the story up and making up a current date for it that the Daily Mail didn't claim.

And run-of-the-mill poor science reporting. To a casual reader, the piece is going to suggest that scientists modified particular genes to get the desired result, when what really happened was that the scientists sucked some of the fluid out of a healthy cell and injected it (and everything it contains) into the egg of a woman who was having trouble conceiving. This wasn't a tinkering-with-base-pairs sort of genetic modification, it was hit-or-miss, at best.

My error. I had that backwards in my mind. Never mind.
