By now, I'm sure everyone has heard of the story of Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the face by some taliban fuckers for daring to say that girls should be able to go to school.
Some people with a little bit of decency have decided to give Malala something she truly deserves.
There's a link to a petition to get her nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Earlier this month 15-year old Malala Yusufzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in response to her campaign against the destruction of girls schools in Pakistan. In the face of terror, Malala risked her life to speak out for the rights of girls everywhere.
Malala's bravery has sparked a global movement and we believe she deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous work. |

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

While it's a nice thought, it's unlikely to make a difference:Nominations
Nomination forms are sent by the Nobel Committee to about 3000 individuals, usually in September the year before the prizes are awarded. These individuals are often academics working in a relevant area. For the Peace Prize, inquiries are sent to governments, members of international courts, professors and rectors, former Peace Prize laureates and current or former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The deadline for the return of the nomination forms is 31 January of the year of the award. The Nobel Committee nominates about 300 potential laureates from these forms and additional names. The nominees are not publicly named, nor are they told that they are being considered for the prize. All nomination records for a prize are sealed for 50 years from the awarding of the prize.
Selection
The Nobel Committee then prepares a report reflecting the advice of experts in the relevant fields. This, along with the list of preliminary candidates, is submitted to the prize-awarding institutions. The institutions meet to choose the laureate or laureates in each field by a majority vote. Their decision, which cannot be appealed, is announced immediately after the vote. A maximum of three laureates and two different works may be selected per award... |

She was an advocate for the education of women. What did she do to promote peace? |

Empowering women seems to lead to more stable (and thus more peaceful) societies. |

She needs to be elected President.
That, apparently, promotes peace.

If the EU can get a Nobel, so should Malala. What a courageous child! |

Sometimes it's done to simply send a message. Barack Obama really didn't get it for anything other than the fact that he wasn't George W. Bush. And that was good enough reason for me.

One would think education for women would promote peace. One does not need political excuses. Perhaps Mitt will win one for "not being Obama." "Good enough reason," perhaps, but really not.
The Nobel Peace Prize has, sadly, long ago become a local political statement devoid of the majesty it so cheaply squandered. Giving it again to someone who actually deserves it--not so serve ignorant political points--may breath a bit of legitimacy back in to it, perhaps.
Then this ceases being a "media issue" and belongs in politics.

Perhaps it does, and education for women is exactly what she is standing up for. Or did you miss that part of the story?

Could not have, for if I did I could not have made the observation.
Perhaps you missed that part of my post . . . though you quoted it.
Curious.

It seemed to me that you were thinking that she was not doing anything in that regard, and was therefore unworthy of the award. No matter, I think she is, and see no reason to think otherwise. |

Oh that's right, blame me. All I said was that peace and women's rights are different issues. I didn't realize that everyone just intuitively knows that they "seem" to be related.
I have nothing to do with this absolutely inexplicable misunderstanding. Although it does reinforce my opinion that people on these boards don't understand sentences so simple that any small lamb or child could understand them. |

Yes, for a simple child, these issues may seem unrelated. You don't go into sociology and anthropology until you grow up a bit and realise that things aren't that simple. Many issues that are seemingly unrelated to the simple mind are actually linked to each other by the rather complex organism called Homo Sapien, and its behaviour. |
