First, Arab Spring wasn't anyone's political scheme. It just happened that one uprising (in Tunisia) against a corrupt dictator soon spread to become many by emulation.
Yes, with democracy for the first time, sometimes opportunistic Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt win. For a while. But look at the mounting fury of the Egyptians ignited by how the Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi has defied the courts and seized dictatorial power.
Morsi has validated the worst fears of the Egyptians who worried that the election of the Brotherhood would lead to a theocratic dictatorship. I doubt they'll let him get away with it. All over the Middle East and North Africa is much the same. Though the process is chaotic, and will have many setbacks, it seems there is a general desire to supplant all those dictatorships with democracies.
I have high hopes for the Arabs.

I think if you count the wins and losses (and status quos) the overall effect of the Arab Spring has still been positive, even after recategorizing Egypt and Libya as negatives (from a "democratic reforms" point-of-view). |

we'll see how positive it is when the new regime starts persecuting the coptics and blowing up the pyramids. |
